What is the last clarinet played in this clip? It's even smaller than an Ab sopranino:

I believe there is a high G clarinet, but I don't think that last one was that! I vote for a some instrument builder's novelty project even though I have no qualifications...

I also think that tiny sopranino is a novelty item, since instead of posting a caption with the name and the key, Cyrille Mercadier called it "Unlisted." Jane Feline had jumped in my lap to listen to the set. She generally likes clarinets. (Okay, I probably shouldn't say that in public or else she might lose her cat credentials and have to re-register as a dog....) But she shuddered and recoiled when Mercadier played that shrill little squeaker. I agree with her! Hideous tone!

The tiny instrument may have been what they referred to as the "red hot fountain pen" allegedly played in some early jazz recordings.

I'm curious about the octo contra alto. Has anything ever been written for it?

It'll be very useful for reading straight off contrabassoon or double bass parts (substituting a treble clef and adding three sharps/subtracting three flats) as being in EEEb it will be at the same pitch as them sounding an 8ve lower than written - an EEb contra-alto will sound at written pitch and will have to be played down the 8ve.

Yeah. I know I can't afford one but I automatically fall in love with instruments that defeat my computer's subwoofer. On the bottom three notes, it produced rhythmic farting instead of fundamental tones. (Oops -- well, you know what I mean... [tongue]).

I had the wonderful experience of buying two clarinets (a Buffet RC A) and a Leblanc Eb from Cyrille in the 1980s. We were both young men then! Still have the conversion of the Francs to dollars (less the value added tax which was refunded) on the Eefer -- came to $578!
