 Help what is this ?

I have a Buffet-Crampon & Cie Clarinet that saids "made in Germany" also a serial number "787011" The mouth piece saids "Viandoem" Maybe ? then Paris under it, with a B45 on the side. It all came together in a nice mouron box. The mouth piece has a cover with it, cant tell if its silver or nickel it is kind of shiny, so are the keys and gatherings. I am not familar with Clarinets so was wonder what this is please ? Thank you. I looked all over but it appears some of the serial numbers were not published or noted, so they dont have mine recorded, it DOESNT HAVE any R13, 11, 12 or 10's, and the serial numbers really do not tell me nothing, it appears each peice that I can read anything only has the RC or BC under the logo nothing else. I am trying to figure out if its expensive or a cheaper model I was told its apretty good one but not sure, I know nothing about them, onelast thing the mouthpiece appears to be plastic, but the rest of it looks like a black wood thats been coated with something to preserve it maybe ? Please help...Thank you...Joannie
Sorry the case saids Wico, W Germany so it has different places on everything it looks ike...

If it's wooden, it's an E11 - if it's plastic, it's a B12. These clarinets are made in Germany by Schreiber (famous for their bassoons) for Buffet.

The mouthpiece is a Vandoren B45 which is a standard upgrade mouthpiece - far better than the plastic one supplied with the clarinet but (in my opinion) not the best choice.

thank you for your reply, so this is like a cheapy instrurment ? because I couldnt find the R thing they speak of, and I wasnt sure, someone told me it was an intermediate, and a pretty good clarinet ?
Also the mouth piece is plastic but the rest is like a black wood grain very pretty kind of, i dont think they could get plastic to look like that, the keys are silver kind of shiny ...

Not really a 'cheapy' instrument as it's a good quality student model that's built well. The wooden ones are lacquered to make them look uniform (as wood varies from joint to joint) and the plastic ones have a matt wood grain finish.

The mouthpiece is made from ebonite (hard rubber) which is the choice material - plastics are generally used for mass produced (ie. moulded) mouthpieces. Vandoren mouthpieces are made from moulded blanks, then machined and hand finished.

The best way to tell whether it's a wood or plastic instrument is to look at the sockets or the ends of the tenons - on wooden instruments you'll see wood grain and on plastic ones they'll be completely smooth and shiny.

The keys are either nickel or silver plated depending when it was made - they were nickel plated originally then they offered them with silver plate in the late '90s.

There's a serial number search engine on Buffet's site but I think that only gives details for their French built clarinets from the E13 upwards. I'm not sure if Schreiber has a similar search engine on their site considering they built these clarinets.

Since I stopped working at a music shop back in the late '90s I lost track of B12 and E11 serial numbers, so not sure what numbers they're up to now.

Have you been to the Buffet website recently, Chris. Buffet has redone it and I can't find the serial number look-up. Or is it there and I'm missing it.

Best regards,
jnk
