Not really a 'cheapy' instrument as it's a good quality student model that's built well. The wooden ones are lacquered to make them look uniform (as wood varies from joint to joint) and the plastic ones have a matt wood grain finish.
The mouthpiece is made from ebonite (hard rubber) which is the choice material - plastics are generally used for mass produced (ie. moulded) mouthpieces. Vandoren mouthpieces are made from moulded blanks, then machined and hand finished.
The best way to tell whether it's a wood or plastic instrument is to look at the sockets or the ends of the tenons - on wooden instruments you'll see wood grain and on plastic ones they'll be completely smooth and shiny.
The keys are either nickel or silver plated depending when it was made - they were nickel plated originally then they offered them with silver plate in the late '90s.
