Sorry, I'm having problems posting this properly. I think the thread is now intact ... how to clean the bore of a clarinet.

I doubt it was as bad as an old Albert system I had the misfortune of cleaning up where the bore was so encrusted with crud, it had crystallised and resembled black sugar. As the speaker tube didn't intrude and it didn't have a thumb bush, the job was made easier without these intrusions.
I used a nylon trumpet valve casing brush fixed to a wooden handle to it to remove the majority while still dry, then used wet rags on a flute cleaning rod to further clean the remainder with, finally cleaning with dry cloth rags followed with a good oiling and further polishing over several days instead of all in one go.
If the bore is dull due to raised grain, then fine emery paper glued to a wooden dowel can be used to smooth it down, then a good wipe with several oily rags (use a good quality vegetable based bore oil) to clear the remaining dirt and dust and also to oil the bore in the process.
