I have a wooden clarinet marked Auguste Buffet Paris a harp logo and a star logo. It also mentions the word brevete on the bell. I cannot find a serial number. Can anyone please tell me what I have and how to date it or even where to look for a serial number. Thankyou

Your serial number can be found near the bottom of the left hand joint. It may be a little faint, but you should be able to find it there.

"Brevete' " is French for "patented". European patent claims often don't include the patent date. When you do find the serial number, you can probably date the clarinet right here on sneezy.org, where there's a listing of Buffet serial numbers with their dates (under "How old is my...?" if the links are the same as before the changeover to the new machine).

I have some more information. The clarinet is very old. It has a simple fingering system, what a shame, I still don't know how old or if it has any value to anyone. My wife wants to learn the clarinet and will therefore require one with the modern 'Boem'(i think?) finguring system

I remember reading somewhere...
Auguste Buffet was related to Dennis Buffet(can't remem exactly) "Buffet Crampon" was derived when from his(dennnis) wife, Zoe Crampon.

The key to whether or not the clarinet is at all usable is not the fingering system but the pitch. Buffet made some albert system clarinets that were high pitch. I have one that has lovely tone. But, you cannot play it with anyone. I paid $200 for it -- but I didn't know about pitch. I
gather that it is worth less than $100. High quality low pitch albert system clarinets fetch about $250 on eBay.

I had an Auguste Buffet while in Junior High School in the fifties (it was old then). It is long gone. If you would like to sell yours--or if somone else has one to sell please advise.

Following up on your 18 year old inquiry, I have an Auguste Buffet that I'd be game to part with. Have't looked at it in awhile, but I think the pads were OK, but keys are oxidized and some scratches and a tight crack in the bell. Attached is a pic. Regards,
