I'm moving to Montreal this week to go to McGill for my masters in Orchestral Performance. I need to get some work done on my horns and I was wondering if anyone had information on someone I could get in touch with to repair my horns.
I'm looking for someone really reliable, I've had some bad experiences before....
Once I went to a guy left my horns with him, came to pick them up and when I tested them I realized they weren't mine, it didn't feel right. So I told him that it didn't feel like my horn and insisted that it wasn't mine. He laughed at me and rolled his eyes saying "of course it doesn't I just did work on it so its going to feel different". I kept insisting it and he kept brushing me off and finally looked at the serial #'s. And... BINGO it was his own personal lower joint on MY clarinet. He followed that with "Wow, you must really know your horn to be able to feel that..." Of course I know my horn that well.. don't you??
ANYWAY, that aside.... money is not an issue. I just need a very good very reliable person I can take this to up there.

There are two places I would recommend in Montreal...
Twigg Musique store (http://www.twigg-musique.com/) has great repair techs on staff, I know people from Ottawa that go there specifically for their quality service.
Pascal Veraquin (http://www.veraquin.com/en/index.php) is another great place to go too. His name is very well known in Montreal and Ottawa for high quality repairs and high quality service.
I am also very picky where I bring my horns. If the repair guy in Ottawa is busy I will gladly go to either of these places even though they are out of town for me....that's how well I'd recommend them.

Fantastic! Thank you so much. I also found Musique de Marc but it seems like it would be a bit difficult to get there without a car (which I am not planning on bringing with me to the city). I will definitely look into both of these. How much do they generally run?

Maybe ask other clarinet/woodwind student and teachers at the university to see who thry recommend the most. It's generally better to ask at least a few people.

I believe Taplin-Weir are based near Montreal.
They do wonderful repairs and services for clarinets.
John and Patti are both extremely nice and helpful. Highly recommended.

When I lived in Montreal (10 years ago) I used to go to Veraquin.
My teacher, Bob Crowley, went to Twigg
Many also really liked Atelier et Boutique du Musicien
So my personal vote goes to Veraquin, but check with you McGill teacher. Things may ave changed.
