This orchestra, trained and directed by Daniel Barenboim, has just completed a cycle of all Beethoven's symphonies at the UK BBC Promenade concerts.
Marvellous playing from the whole orchestra and woodwind very fine.
Probably most concerts still available on BBC iplayer (don't know how to insert these links - sorry)
I noted that of the 4 clarinetists 3 played German system and the 4th almost certainly Reform Boehm.
The sound of these certainly worked well in Beethoven.
Does anyone know the reason for this strong Germanic influence on a middle eastern European group that is physically centered on Spain?

Barenboim prefers Oehler system clarinets in the German repertoire. When he was MD in Chicago, he insisted that Combs and Smith were to use those instruments (Wurlitzers, I believe, with a modification that allowed the use of French bore mouthpieces) in addition to the Boehm system.

Smith: "Compare the original instrument of Beethoven's day to that of the Albert/OehlerWurlitzer and then the Klose. Acoustically, the Wurlitzer/Oehler is definitely closer via pedigree to the original instruments of Beethoven's time.
To my ear, the sound and acoustical characteristics give a distinct advantage to the present day German system if one is interested in coming closer to the sound produced by clarinets of Beethoven's time."
Pay: "I find myself in agreement with Gregory Smith that, in general, modern German instruments and period instruments share that tractability in 18th century music, and that French instruments are less amenable..." (quote clipped).

I'm listening to that very orchestra right now on our local public radio station, doing a movement of Beethoven's 6th. The clarinets sound marvelous.

But now that Barenboim is gone, and the CSO has a new principal, I wonder if they are still using Oehler system instruments.

When I was in Israel and Palestine back in 2009, I met quite a few teachers that taught for the Edward Said Foundation. The main clarinet teacher was from Germany and taught German system as well as French. In fact I remember a few of the teachers that filled up the orchestra to be German along with some players from the US. I wonder if this has any influence?
