 Mouthpiece suggestion
Author: Joanna
Date:   2012-07-10 02:14

Hey all!

I recently started playing bass clarinet again to prepare for my school's orchestral placement auditions in the Fall. I was wondering if anyone had any good suggestions for mouthpieces. I also need to get myself a mouthpiece for Eb as I am soon playing Reed 2 for a production of West Side Story. Needless to say, a good mouthpiece would definitely help!

Thanks!

Joanna

I don't think you can go wrong with Walter Grabner's pieces. The bass and Bb mouthpieces I got from him are excellent; the bass is the best I've played on.

I haven't gotten an Eb m/p from him (I have a very nice Johnston), but if I needed an eefer m/p, that's where I'd start looking.

I had a good experience with a Clark Fobes Basso Nova Mouthpiece.

The Fobes Debut is also a fine mouthpiece for bass and not too pricey.

The Fobes bass mpc (my model is marked CF) is the best bass mpc I've played on.

Clark's newest is the CWF, at $395. I play on a Kanter.

My Fobes Debut mouthpiece tenon was a whole millimetre narrower than the socket on my bass Vito neck socket. It depends on the model of bass you will be using.

I play a Grabner CX_BS bass mpc on my Buffet 1193-2 and love it. I've also had good results with a Pomarico crystal "Jazz" #2, but much prefer the Grabner for over-all tone control, response (particularly in the upper register) and dynamic flexability. Walter is a talented clarinetist and wonderful craftsman--also customer friendly. He will make every effort to fit you with a mouthpiece that plays the way you need it to.

I think there is a trick where you can wet the cork on the mouthpiece, and then hold a lighter under the cork to expand it if your mouthpiece is loose. Anyhow, a loose cork should not influence your decision for/against a good mouthpiece.

I am happy to use a Fobes Nova, but I'm less than expert on that particular instrument.

Bradford Behn's artist and vintage\signature collection bass mouthpieces are fantastic. They are a higher caliber mouthpiece in both material, a completely different tier of mouthpieces than what is popular these days.

Revolutionary material, custom design, unique and superior performance.

Worth a phone call and trial...

The Vandoren B45 is an excellent E flat mouthpiece. It's used by several professional symphonic players I know. Oh, and me!

Apologies, I meant the B44. Force of habit...

Thanks for the suggestions everyone! I will definitely check out the Fobes, although I am unsure of where to look in and around Montreal. Any suggestions? The Vandoren is definitely on my list as they are super affordable and are usually really good mouthpieces!

FWIW--I used to play a Vandoran B45 bass mpc, but now prefer the Grabner. It simply plays with more ease in the upper register, especially on those "problem" G#5 & A5 tones. Just another 2 cents worth......hope we all were of help.

Fobes lists Atelier du Musicien in Montreal as one of his dealers.

Before anyone takes a butane lighter to their mouthpiece in an experimental expansion of the cork: use Teflon pipe-thread tape.

It's not "pretty", but is totally removable; though you may compress the existing cork a bit more than it currently lies.

As a nice side-effect you'll avoid the danger of warped the exit bore/tenon of your mouthpiece if you have no clue what you're doing.
