All of my R13 Buffets from 96,000 and below have a solid piece of cork under the entire throat G# key.
However, all my R13's from 154,000 and higher have already changed over to a G# key with metal nib and small cork bumper (the style still used today)
Thus - somewhere between 96,000 and 154,000 the G# key cork bumper design was permanently changed.
Just curious - if you have an R13 between the serial numbers mentioned above perhaps we can determine approximately when the throat G# cork bumper design was first changed.

I have a 160,000 and like yours it has changed.
I do remember playing one of these older horns with the full cork and the placement of the key was very low when playing the G# so a lot of players added cork to the top of the G# key, so it was a lot easier to play a run using the G# key. My guess is before the early 70's this was changed in a good way. When playing these earier versions that left hand index finger would stand up like a poll! Mainly people with longer fingers. Thus the need to build up and add a cork on top of this G# key.
Nice topic.

Actually we know it's between 104100 and 108999, which, according to the Buffet serial number lookup puts it between October 30, 1968 and July 18, 1969.
Best regards,

I wonder if the Bb G# key was done before the A clarinet? For some reason I think the A clarinet wasn't adjusted for a year or 3 after the Bb.
