 Clarinet Duet
Author: Clarinetero
Date:   2012-01-28 06:54

I have been searching for a piece for two clarinets without accompaniment, just like the Poulenc's Sonata for Two Clarinets. I really want a piece composed for two clarinets not a transcription. If anyone can recommend something it will be really appreciated.

Thanks!!!

I really enjoy Bernhard Crusell's Three Progressive Clarinet Duets

Written for clarinet, by a clarinettist.

No.2 is available for free within the IMSLP on-line wiki library

Clarinetero - During the classical period, there were many duos written for 2 clarinets by such composers as Charles Bochsa (père), FA Hoffmeister, Lefevre, JC Schroeder, Anton Stadler, Michel Yost, CPE Bach and Mozart (basset horn duos arranged for clarinet). Granted, these pieces are not "just like the Poulenc's Sonata for Two Clarinets" but some might say they are better :)
If you go to the various free sheet music websites, you will find many arrangements for 2 clarinets, both modern and classical (Mozart opera arias, Beethoven Trio Op. 11, etc).

Why not try a bit of swing jazz for 2 clarinets... Recommend the 3 jazz duets by Gordon Lewin.. "Views of the Blues"....great fun, and crowd pleasers, for a contrast in a concert....... Done them a few times. Have done them on bass clars too !!

Was about to post a YT**e link for clarinets, but will resist, as I sampled it a few mins ago. Forest of banana skins etc Enough said.

Hey Ho,

There are well over 100 duets, some of them free, at http://www.free-scores.com/boutique/boutique-search-engine-uk.php?CATEGORIE=100&style=&instrumentation=2%2BClarinets%2B%28duet%29&ordrepar=&narrow=1&search=clarinet+duet&imageField.x=20&imageField.y=5&editeur=&niveau=&langue=&medias=&autres=.

Part 3 of the Lazarus Method has good duets. You can download it from http://www.free-scores.com/download-sheet-music.php?pdf=20283.
The Three Grand Artistic Duets, at the beginning, are great, athletic fun, with the two parts equal in interest and difficulty. Musically they're good but not great, and I'm not sure they would work in performance. The Three Grand Concert Duets, beginning on p. 383, are less virtuosic but much better music based on themes from operas.

The IMSLP has several duets originally written for clarinets http://imslp.org/wiki/List_of_Compositions_Featuring_the_Clarinet. Despite your preference, you shouldn't skip the two Mozart Duos originaly for violin and viola. They're Mozart at his absolute best. http://imslp.org/wiki/2_Duos_for_Violin_and_Viola,_K.423-424_%28Mozart,_Wolfgang_Amadeus%29. Duo #1 is available for two Bb clarinets, but since the second oplayer can read the viola part in bass clef, it's better that way.

The Klose Method, downloadable from http://petrucci.mus.auth.gr/imglnks/usimg/2/2b/IMSLP34489-PMLP77801-kloses-conservatory-method-for-the-clarinet.pdf, has a large collection of duets beginning at p. 110. They're good music, but the second parts are accompaniments, easier and less interesting than the first parts.

The Langenus Method, Part III is available as an inexpensive download at http://everynote.com/clarinet.show/161063.note It has solo-first-part/accompaniment-second-part duets similar to those in Klose. It also has transcriptions of the three Beethoven Duos for Clarinet and Bassoon and most of the Beethoven Trio for 2 Oboes and English Horn.

Get a pianist, crank up your finger speed and do Ponchielli's Il Convegno. http://www.vcisinc.com/clarinetmusicduets.htm #C524.

The 3 Vocalises by R. Vaughan Williams for soprano & Bb clarinet might work for C & Bb clarinets, or with one player transposing. The voice is a wind instrument, after all.
