I'm going to send my Leblanc L7 to repairman to get overhauled. The valentino pad is one of the options. Any experience? Thanks in advance.

I like Valentino pads, very simple to put on, and they hold up. I give them a thumbs up.

I put them on my son's YCL34 by myself and think it works. I was told not to put them on pro horn. But repairman highly recommend Valentino.

I know of one working professional who has changed over to the newest type of Valentino pad, and I think some of you may be very surprised in the near future when one of the major manufacturers comes out with valentino pads on their whole line (student to pro) of instruments. That info come from a reliable 2nd party.

Years ago I impored a range of Valentino products and found them all disgusting! (I think that for the 'corks' the self-adjesive allowed the cork to migrate, and they could not be sanded) Unfortunately I've forgotten why I detested the pads (did they perish???). But I have never forgiven Smith for marketing and hallowing these products. I feel downright conned that I ever bought them. I have stocks that just sit there. Unfortunately I now find it difficult to trust their other products. Just stick to bladder pads like every reputable manufacture does. Other viable alternatives are cork for the upper section, leather (over felt), or Norbeck which are totally waterproof and inert(providing the tone hole edges are in an excellent state and there is no wobble in pivots, and you do not mind the slight sticky feel as the pads lift.)

I agree with Mark. I think that soon some manufacturer will start to use them. I think thief pads are good, but I do not like the adhesive backs, but they never loose thief seat and last a long time.

Valentino's are intended to be for quick or emergency repairs. If you are getting a whole instrument repaired you should get it done properly with leather or gor tex pads properly seated for the instrument. I am wondering why any repairman would recommend valentino pads for a professional repair job sounds dodgy. I use prestini leather pads or hermes synthetic but their are many other options.

Valentino has come out with a "newer" green-back pad. I've heard the same rumors that Mark posted above. Currently Buffet uses them on the register key of all their clarinets and completely on thier student B-10 model. LeBlanc is using them as register key pads and C#/G# pads on their clarinets. I haven't tried them as yet. There is only so much overhead a small "one-man" shop can afford. Also, I'm comfortable with what I'm using. I like to use cork pads on the upper joint along with the lower joint B and Bb and use premium bladder pads for the lowest four. I have some customers that like for me to put leather pads in the lowest four and I'm comfortable with doing that also.

The larger Valentino pads can be floated and levelled using shellac or hotmelt just like "traditional" pads.

Are Valentinos those rubbery sticky-back things that you have to get rid of before putting in 'real' ones on Vitos? Yucky....

The last instrument i purchased from the woodwind ( a buffet) had valentino pads on the register, throat and side trill keys.

Yes, Ron. Glad to see I am not the only guy to recognise yuckiness.
They may be more valid than bladder pads on a register key where the bladder is easily cut, but a shaped (domed) cork pad is vastly superior because it makes the throat Bb far clearer.
This is to do with shape. Valentinos have about the worst shape, because, I believe, of the sharp edges which create air turbulence.

Gordon -
Yucky is - well... yucky. I don't know how else to describe it. I feel I should add a modest cleanup fee before re-padding one of those things. But, I know, it's not the customer's fault ~~ :

Mark - 'green backed'? new?
I'm out of my territory here. I know this topic is about Valentino pads. I think I know what they are, at least the ones I've had to fool with on some older Vitos and a Bundy. They're white, plastic like material with a gooey backing.
I'm also aware that 'new' ones are being talked discussed. Are the new ones green backed? Are they better? If so, I don't know about them and would appreciate being informed. There is a lot that I don't know; that's why I keep coming back. I'm sure there are others who read these posts who appreciate the info too.
This Bulletin Board is the most informative thing that ever happened in my lifetime. I'm grateful for it.

ron,
The newer Valentino pads come with a different adhesive - it's covered by a green paper. It doesn't migrate like the old adhesive.

Thanks, Mark -
I have no experience with the newer Valentino pads. I hope they're an improvement
over the ones I've had to contend with.
Hi, Gordon -
I've found taking expired (old style) Valentino pads out to be a Chore. The sticky back glue, whatever it is, is like mushy, gummy plastic that doesn't want to give up and, as Mark indicates, it tends to ooze. I wonder whether horror movie effects people use it to create slime stuff I've used contact cement clean up fluid, M.E.K., Goof Off, lacquer thinner and other stuff (alcohol doesn't seem to do anything - for IT :/ ) but you still need to rub and scrub to clean those cups. I haven't tried putting the keys in the freezer yet... that's next on my list of things to try. Still, I worry that *any* residue will impede the adherence of shellac to metal cups later on. I haven't had a horn come back (to me)... yet. If one did come back to another tech, believe me, I'd hear about it and hear about it and hear about it - LOL :|) That's one of those 'time will tell' things. I've only been doing this seriously for the past year now so I don't have any personal statistics yet.
=========================
P.S. to Mark C.
Mark, please excuse me for drifting off the subject again. I've been typing in my 'new' e-mail address into the "Your Email:" box for the past couple of weeks but the 'old' one keeps showing up there. Very seldom does anyone contact me outside the BB but, just the same, if somebody wished to... Can I change it?
Thanks for all the info.

Retyping in the "Your Email" should do it (I'm trying mine right now). If for some reason it doesn't, figure out how to delete the "cookie" that Sneezy leaves on your browser.

Hmmm ... it works fine for me. Maybe you've recently set your browser not to accept cookies? Then it'd keep using the old one until you deleted it.

Well... it's working okay now. I'm not on the best of terms with computers, that's all. Thanks, Mark. I won't touch anything now - if it ain't broke.... :|
