Altissimo E to high C squeak
Author: SamuelChan

Hi guys! First time posting so yeah.. I got this problem while playing the altissimo register on my clarinet. When I play the E, then jump two notes down to C, I have this small squeak before C comes out. This is not the case for doing this same thing on any other notes. I've been playing for a short 3 years, and is having a Selmer Signature, P04XXX. I play on the C85 120 mthpc and Gonzales reeds, with the Vandoren M/O Lig. And one more Q, I have this small little chipped-off part at the barrel, where the lower joint is supposed to go in. Will there be any problems?
Thanks,
Samuel

The problem may be that you are compensating too much for the 'E' and then the compensation is causing too much differential for the 'C' (only a guess). Try to ensure that you are using the RH pinky Ab/Eb key vent for the 'E.' Also, you need to be aware that the UPPER note of a pair will always take more 'energy.' It is more obvious in these situations.

Thanks Paul, I shall try it again taking your advice. I'm using the right pinky Ab/Eb key on all altissimo notes (except C#) and the fork key for F.Paul Aviles wrote:

Try this fingering for the E6:

TR XXX/OOO plus lh first finger Ab. This is a great fingering for slurs leading up to the E6 as well.

The small chip in the barrel should not effect anything as long as it's sealing around the cork joint. As far as the small squeak I'd say it's most likely either not releasing all your fingers at the same time off of the E or that you're not voicing the C correctly. Since the E takes a bit more high voicing you're probably not "releasing" enough at exactly the time you release you're fingers. It's a little like saying He-Ah going from the E to the C. Sustain the E then Sustain the C and try to feel how the voicing is very slightly different then try to match that feeling at the time you release the fingers from the E to the C. Also practice going from the D to C, then D# to C then E to C, do this over and over again until it's no longer a problem. ESP eddiesclarinet.com

Oops I must be dreaming while typing. It's the bell. And it leaves a small hole after the cork goes in for the chipped-off part. Okay shall try it today. Thanks!

I've only recently found that raising the back of my tongue to my upper molars is a wonderful thing to do to clarify (sorry!) the clarion register.

But, it makes getting back down again more difficult. I find that I have to consciously lower my tongue to get back across the upper break. Then, I can restore my air jet into the mouthpiece by returning my tongue to my upper teeth.

Clarinets love to squeak, but are difficult go get out of the upper registers.
