Well, one of my star students has come down with mono during holiday break. What a drag!! Her mom is concerned about reinfection from mouthpiece, reeds, etc. Any words of wisdom I can offer her?

If you want to be safe, discard the reeds she was using, wash the mp in warm, soapy water, and spray it and the horn (inside) down with an instrument sanitizer.

You get mono only once. It would be other people playing her instrument who could get infected, she would not be reinfected. I would only worry if you play on her instrument... just switch mouthpieces or something in that case.

I'm not sure but I don't believe you can get mono from something I believe it has to be passed on via kissing or other personal contact. In any case, most germs have a short life span so have her ask her doctor, or google it, how long the mono germ lives on something. Throwing out the reeds and washing the mouthpiece is a good idea in any case just to be sure. I've never had a student that got mono a second time, at least not in the same season that I know of. 1- i dont think mono is bacterial, but im no doctor
2-whenever i get a used mouthpiece i always wipe it down with rubbing alchohol, and wash that off real well. or you could sterilize it with booze, and that doesnt need to be/ shouldnt be washed off! m.y.k.

I came down with it in high school, played before it got really bad, and went back to playing when I was out of the worst of it and recovering. If she (or mom and dad) are concerned, wash the mpc and drop the reeds into a bowl of water with a bit of listerine for a few minutes.
Do be aware that depending on how bad it got, she may tire quickly for a few weeks. You might suggest shorter practice sessions.
