Hello,
Recently I have become somewhat obsessed w/ Souvenirs de Voyage by Bernard Herrmann. I have been looking for the sheet music but have yet to find it anywhere. Do any of you know if it is possible to purchase the sheet music for this?
I have been listening to David Shifrin's recording for some time now and find the music to be quite stunning.
Thank you for your time!

The Herrmann Quintet is published by MMB Music (St. Louis).
Copyright is held by Norma Shepherd Herrmann (BMI) 1978.
Score and parts are hand-written.
I read somewhere that Herrmann intended to write a 4th movement. As you probably noticed, the third movement doesn't sound like a last movement.
I know what you mean about being obsessed with the piece. There is no other piece like it. David Shifrin's liquid, floating sound is the perfect voice for this quintet.

I wonder how many other clarinetists have also been obsessed by this recording at one time or another? Your post brought back memories for me: Spring of 1992...I must have listened to that Shifrin Souvenirs de Voyage recording every day for a couple of months.

Simon thanks for the information. Hopefully I can obtain a copy someday. =o) After searching for MMB music I found that it was purchased by LKMP http://www.laurenkeisermusic.com/ no lucky finding it there.
Funny you mention the 3rd movement, it's so moving.
Eric I don't blame you, I think I have fallen in love w/ this piece. Although I haven't quite listened to it for 2 months straight... I'm almost there. ;o)

MondeLuna - Regarding finding the sheet music for Souvenirs, your best bet might be interlibrary loan if you, or someone you know, is affiliated with a school library.
The library of the school at which I teach has the the score and parts for the Souvenirs. Its call number is:
M562 H47 1978
and the link you can find it at is:

Great idea Simon! None of the universities in my area have the music in their library. However I forgot to check the city library, it actually has a pretty large music section. Maybe I will get lucky.
I haven't checked the ICS either, so if I find it I will let you all know.

MondeLuna -
Your local reference librarian should be able to arrange an interlibrary loan from McGill. If they won't loan to a non-university library, your librarian can do an end-run by calling up a friend at the local university.
Sometimes it's easier not to do it on the Web.

Ken - Thanks for clarifying interlibrary loan.
MondeLuna - I should have more specific and explained interlibrary loan. Like Ken mentioned, you can arrange to have a library in your area borrow the Herrmann *from McGill*. If you are affiliated with a university you can probably do it through your library. If you are not affiliated with a university but know someone who is, you could ask them to borrow it through interlibrary loan (from McGill) for you.
The ICS does not have the Herrmann (according to their site).

Hi, I just searched the McGill University Library through the web interface, and nothing comes up for keywords "Bernard Herrmann" as author and "Souvenirs de Voyage" for the name of the piece.
Does the music library still have it? I work at Stanford and can request an interlibrary loan.

Yes, it's there. Use "Herrmann souvenirs" as keywords and look at the bottom of the returned info. It's listed as a clarinet quintet.

I'm not seeing it....
I am looking here:
http://catalogue.mcgill.ca.proxy2.library.mcgill.ca/
That says the "Classic Catalog" Catalog>full catalog
and when I put in "Herrmann Souvenirs" the result I get is "No Exact Match"...which is what I got for every other search I did with any combination of Bernard Herrmanns name and the title of the piece. ARRGH.

Alan - The reason you are not finding it on the McGill library site might be because the title of the quintet is "Souvenir du Voyage" (no s at the end of Souvenir).
When I type in "Hermmann Souvenirs" in "basic keywords" I get "no exact match". When I type in "Hermmann Souvenir" in "basic keywords" I get a return of the score/parts.

Alan,
Rather than trying to find it yourself, I would leave it up to the librarian in charge of interlibrary loans at Stanford. There is more than one copy out there (e.g., the Manhattan School of Music has one) and these librarians have a search network. Yours will put out a request and someone should eventually respond. Usually a library will work with the first responder or, if there are several, the nearest. (There may be a copy available at U.C. Santa Barbara which has a large collection of his works, including manuscripts and writings as I recall.) One thing I will note, for some materials like this, some libraries will only respond to requests for a music department faculty member.
Best regards,
jnk

Over on the klarinet list Alessandro Carbonare just asked about the Herrmann Souvenir du Voyage.
Someone responded with the following information (I don't know about the ethics of quoting from other lists so I will paraphrase):
Bernard Herrmann [notice the spelling - two R's and two N's in his
last name].
Clarinet quintet : Souvenir du voyage : clarinet and string quartet (1967).
Publisher: St. Louis, MO : MMB Music, [C1978].
MMB Publications now distributed by Lauren Keiser Music Publishing:
http://laurenkeisermusic.com/LKMP_sales_april_09.pdf
"This title was not transferred and the copyright has reverted to the
composer's estate."
<web: www.bernardherrmann.com>
http://www.thebernardherrmannestate.com/cms/page/contact
Copies cataloged in 63 Academic Libraries:
nd-string-quartet-1967/oclc/35705867&referer=brief_results>
----------
A quick survey of Worldcat shows that of the 63 libraries that have the Hermmann Souvenir du Voyage in one form or another, 18 libraries in North America have the score.

This is very helpful! Thanks! I am running into issues here on the Farm. The music library doesn't do interlibrary loan, they referred me to the main undergrad library. They refused to do it, because I'm actually staff in a research building associated with the Medical Center. I strongly suspect that Lane Medical Library will balk at asking for a music score, but I will walk over there and ask.
If I manage to get a copy of this thing, I will do it on a recital in the Spring, and I will put the recording up on YouTube....assuming that's not copywrited.
Also, it appears that UC Santa Barbara has the original manuscript...it's listed as "Clarinet Quintet". I don't know of another Quintet that he wrote so I assume that is it.
You can see it here: http://findaid.oac.cdlib.org/view?docId=tf438nb3jd;style=oac4;view=dsc#c01-1.7.6.4
scroll down through the musical scores section..."box 5, folders 10, 11".
I'm a UCSB alumni....Hmmmm.....
I also wrote to the Bernard Herrman Estate to ask if there was any way to purchase a copy from them. I won't hold my breath on that one.

I have gotten 2 interlibrary loans and have the score for Souvenirs de Voyage and 4 of the 5 parts for the Quintet. The last interlibrary loan was from University of Puget Sound ... But the Clarinet part was missing. Urgh!! I would love to play this piece with some string players that I play with from time to time but no clarinet part makes it difficult - and reading from the score is nearly impossible. So I am looking for the Clarinet part. I would be happy to reimburse anyone for the cost of copying it and sending it to me. Thanks in advance ....
