 Great English clarinet music
Author: srattle
Date:   2011-11-03 00:11

Hi guys,

I've been asked to put together a couple of programs of English clarinet/piano pieces. Can anyone give me any recommendations. Strangely, I've played almost no english duos, except for Finzi I can't think of any I've played.
It would really help me a lot
Thanks so much!!!

The Malcolm Arnold sonatine is very pretty, although it's a little bit of a trifle. John Ireland wrote a fantasy-sonata. Er... doesn't Bax have a clarinet sonata?

Vaughan Williams Six Studies in English Folksong, perhaps?

Finzi Five Bagatelles, Bax Sonata (in D major), Arnold Sonatine, and the Ireland Fantasy Sonata are all great ideas. The Vaughan Williams Six Studies aren't a personal favorite of mine...but they certainly have a following.

Fortunately, there's more to consider from the English world for clarinet and piano:

Hurlstone Four Characteristic Pieces
Stanford Sonata (He was Irish born...but studied and lived in England for most of his life)
Stanford Three Intermezzi
Howells Sonata
Benjamin Le Tombeau de Ravel (Australian born, but studied and lived in England most of his adult life)

There's also a Bax Sonata in E major (early work), but I don't know if it has been published.

There is a Sonata in one movement (with piano) by William Alwyn that is pretty good. I think he was a British film composer. It is a mid 20th century virtuoso piece. I like it and think it is worth looking at.

Birtwistle wrote some clarinet pieces. There is a quintet (with strings) that is on youtube here...

For an encore you could arrange the Elgar salut d'amour. (originally for violin)

Horowitz Sonatina is a good piece for Duo, Martin Ellerby Sonata, Bliss Pastoral, Paul Patterson Conversations, Alec Templeton Pocket Size Sonatas are short but fun.

John McCabe Three Pieces, Gary Carpenter has written two pieces, one recently for Basset Clarinet and Piano.

Hugh Wood Paraphrase

The Howells, Ireland, Bax and Benjamin are excellent works, highly recommended.

Peter Maxwell Davies also wrote some challenging works for clarinet also.

Have fun!

I add Howard Ferguson's "Four Short Pieces for clarinet and piano"
and Angela Morley's "Harlequin" for clarinet and piano. (I like very much the music of Angela Morley.)

One of the best pieces out there is the "Phantasy Suite" by Thomas Dunhill. 6 or 7 short movements that are a blast to play and listen to.

William Lloyd Webber's Air and Variations, light piece but charaterful, also reasonably technically demanding (is on the ABRSM Grade 8 syllabus).

Don't forget the York Bowen Sonata. Also look out for works by Simon Milton. He is writing now and I'm giving the premier for his Sonata in Jan 2012. You could also try the Three Pieces by Cecil Armstrong Gibbs. I've recorded these for my debut CD. There is also Fetes Champetre and Aria and Finale by John Carmichael. (I've also recorded these for my CD. Contact me off Line for contact details for Simon and John.

Graham Lyons Sonata for Clarinet and Piano. He is also the inventor of the Lyons C Clarinet. A fun, at times jazzy piece.

Bob,

Those Kell recordings contain hardly any English stuff if memory serves.

"Peter Maxwell Davies also wrote some challenging works for clarinet also."

That's an understatement! His Strathclyde #4 might be slow but it's a tremendous challenge. Then there's the Seven Brightnesses...oy. Gives me headaches just thinking about struggling through those.

I've always enjoyed playing the Sonata by Arnold Bax.
