 Selmer bass clarinet peg diameter
Author: DNBoone

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone knows the diameter of the peg for a selmer 67 bass clarinet. I want to play standing occasionally but the tiny peg that comes with it is not long enough. Several companies carry bass clarinet pegs, but none of them know if it will fit a professional selmer.

thanks!

I think would be nice to know the diameter of buffet's 1993 as well. Just to compare. Thanks

Selmer and Buffet floor spikes are both 7mm in diameter.

I haven't checked the peg diameter on the Selmer 65/67 so it's possible they changed. But for some Selmer models, the peg is actually 0.275" (6.85mm) and not 7mm. The Buffet peg for 1193 (and I think previous models too) is 7mm. I found out when I checked the Buffet peg in a Selmer and it wouldn't fit by the smallest amount. It's possible Selmer changed to 7mm but I would guess probably not.

I've been using a Selmer floor spike with my Buffet basset horn (as it's longer) and it's the same diameter (7mm) - but it's a new Selmer one.

So I guess maybe Selmer changed the peg at some point. Though a Selmer 6.85mm peg would fit a Buffet clarinet which uses a 7.0mm one. I'm not sure if the slight play would really be significant. The difference is just small enough that the Buffet peg didn't fit an older Selmer Paris bass clarinet i.e. it wouldn't get into the holder, while an actual Selmer 0.275" peg worked. I will compare the Selmer 67 and Buffet 1193 side by side in a few days.

Thanks for all the replies. I would appreciate the side-by-side comparison. The ones I see advertised at a few places for ~$10 are the .275" ones. I've tried machine shops in the past and none of them carry the right rod stock to make one for me.

I know Alcides Rodriguez from Atlanta Symphony regularly plays the bass clarinet standing. I don't know where he acquired the long peg (he plays on a Buffet, and I understand the diameter discrepancy), but he might have some ideas. http://www.alcidesrodriguez.com/contact

If you can find a source of steel rods of specific diameters (be it mild, silver or stainless steel), then that's your best bet.

If the fitting on a Selmer bass is too narrow for a 7mm floor spike, it can always be drilled out to 7mm as the fitting is made from brass. The cut-out in the locking screw may or may not need widening.

There are more a few (maybe more than a few) bass clarinetists who use a long peg for standing. Both with Buffets and Selmers. I used one for a while that I made from a stainless steel rod. I think 7mm is not a standard size, but 8mm is, so I used that and reduced the top 10cm or so to 7mm diameter. The bigger diameter is stronger for the longer peg and there's enough reduced length depending on my mood, shoes, etc. There's also the (slightly curved) step from 8mm to 7mm so in the worst case that the instrument slips (never happened and extremely unlikely) it won't fall the entire height, only a little.

My friend Jeff Anderle at Sqwonk made a wooden one for me that fits on my Selmer. He and Jon Russell use it all the time.

I know Jeff Anderle sells the one that he uses, a carbon fiber one, for a hefty $50. Not sure if it fits selmers but I saw him at the Clarinetfest in Texas use it.

Not sure I want to spend $50 on a peg though.

Stephen Fox sells bass clarinet standing pegs in his web, too. He says that the normal shank diameter (7.0mm) fits the peg holders on Selmer and Buffet bass clarinets. And I add that this peg also fits on Yamaha 622 II bass clarinets.

I just want to cofirm that I just compared a Buffet 1193 and a Selmer 67 and both have 7.0mm diameter pegs.
