 Discovered Problem

Thank you all for previous help on mouthpieces and so forth, but I discovered a reason for all my recent dilemma for my wooden clarinet...I had two leaks.

And a realization why this ended up in my closet for so long...I thought I just could not handle the reed...I thought I was going to develop colon problems or something by playing this thing.

Grin.

Well, now I know why I could not hit certain notes.

Notes that required my right fingers that is.

Well, to top that off, I am super excited.

Now that these two pads have been replaced, my tuner shows me that some notes that I tried on the chromatic tuner are dead on, barrel perfectly on and not adjusted whatsoever...a perfect A# when playing a C. I am overwhelmed with delight. (Howbeit, I have not checked super low or high notes yet.) But, I do realize that weather might change intonation of course on another day...it was a warm sunny day when I tested it.

Someone here mentioned previously that my barrel may have experienced an adjustment prior to my ownership, and I think he was right!

Furthermore, I am finding a perfect place with my Vandoren B45 mouthpiece and a number 1 1/2 reed. I just can't believe how I have progressed in these past few days. So thankful. So happy.

I wish you all a wonderful day of playing as well.

BRAVO, Elk!

You are now well along the start of your 10,000 hours to virtuosity!

Your Bb clarinet will return a Bb when you finger C, as you learned from your previous post on fingering options. (It is hard to find an A# clarinet! ;-)

Continue. This is fun stuff, yes?

Glad you are playing again. With the B-45 the 1 1/2 reed is pretty soft. After a few weeks jump up to a 2, then after a month or 2 jump up to a 2 1/2. The reason for this is your sound will get better real fast, I think with the B-45 a 3 strength reed will sound really great.

Stop in and let us know how you are doing.

Thank you Bob and Bob!!!!
For your many kind words and recommendations.
I realized above that I sounded ridiculous when I mentioned the barrel...about not adjusted whatsoever and then later mentioned that the barrel itself may have been adjusted...these comments were applied to previous comments, and I hope the reader will see that I was referring to the pulling in and pulling out of the barrel as people do to adjust the intonation, and I was not referring to a permanent adjustment as may have been made to this barrel...that conversation stemmed out of a possibility that the length of the clarinet is the not the actual original length, etc. per online info.

Anyway, I am so glad that this clarinet board brought me to a link for fingering charts complete with scales and I know this will get me on the right track if I am diligent to practice them, and not just keep playing simple C songs in my favorite books....ah hummm....grin. But the consolation of what I am doing now is helping me to hear correctly and get notes/fingerings memorized all over again. This method for me gets me so much further ahead than beginner books do, but I don't intend to ignore them either.

Furthermore, I am thinking about having a full set of new pads done on this one. Would not that be lovely to do so? I think it will only enhance everything.
