 Weber 2 Editions
Author: Curinfinwe

I've decided to tackle Weber 2 this year and several other people in my studio are putting together an order from Luyben music, so I'm going to order it from there. However, I don't know much about the editions and edition abbreviations they use on their website. This is the listing for Weber 2:

WEBER, C.M. Concerto #2 (BrH)(Hermann) $21.95
WEBER, C.M. Concerto #2 (CU) $9.95
WEBER, C.M. Concerto #2 (Fen)(Weston) $34.95
WEBER, C.M. Concerto #2 (IMC)(Kell) $15.50
WEBER, C.M. Concerto #2 (RL)(Barmann) $21.00
WEBER, C.M. Concerto #2 (SMC)(Cavally) $17.50

I would have preferred the Henle edition if they had it, but they don't. I've heard the Fentone/Weston one is good, but it's also vastly more expensive than the others. Is there one on this list that's reliable and accurate?
Thanks!
Anna

Why not just buy the Henle edition somewhere else? Are you getting a volume discount for ordering together?

I've got the Robert Lienau (RL) Barmann edition which is really really good.

Carl Baermann has really good articulation and phrasing markings added which I've found are mostly followed on the recordings I've listened to.

I highly recommend it and it's not even the most expensive one on that list :P

Have you looked at the (free) Breitkopf & Hartel edition on IMSLP?

Ah, I had heard that the Lienau was good but I didn't know which one it was on the list. I think I'll go with that one! Thanks!
An Jack, I had considered it, but it's not the clearest scan and as I don't have a printer I'd have to print it at the exorbitant prices my university charges per page, and with the piano part I don't think it would be worth it.

The Henle edition has two clarinet parts.

One is as written by Weber, the other (the Baermann version) is the evolved version of the piece done over his playing career by Heinrick Baermann --according to his son. There are some significant "decorations" in the first movement, and I think that the Baermann version is the one most often performed.

Each edition has something going for it, RL is the origianl Baermann edition, Henle gives you Weber's original and the Baermann, and Weston (if memory serves) gives a modern edition based on Weber's original. It also has some interesting cadenzas iirc.

For a more thoughtful approach I would recomend the Henle, you can see what Baermann recommended but not be a slave to it. Make your own decisions and mark them in the Weber original part. Just my two cents worth!
