 Wind 4tet Rep
Author: Clarinat
Date:   2011-05-26 22:20

Hi there,
I am looking for some suggestions for rep for a wind 4tet (fl, ob, cl, bsn). We have the Francaix but need to fill up another 25mins for a recital.
We are all at masters level in Auckland, NZ and finding it just a little difficult.
Thanks!
Natalie

I really enjoy the piece by Eugene Bozza, Trois Pieces Pour Une Muique De Nuit. Sadly its only 5 or 6 minutes long. It paints a beautiful picture though.

I have a recording if you'd like to hear it. Just send me your email and remind me about your post.

When my Quartet was stuck looking for music we decided to do 4 trio's. Each with a unique combination omitting one player from he quartet each time. I know its hard to find good Quartet music. Certainly its an ensemble that should have more serious attention brought.

There are a few pieces on imslp. The Goepfart is a particularly nice one (at least the first movement).

Arthur Berger's "Quartet for Winds in C Major" is a lovely piece. The counting can be a little tricky at first, but it's well worth the work.

Elliott Carter's "8 Etudes and a Fantasy" is a great piece too. It's very tricky, but one of the most important works for this particular combination of instruments. A great performance of this piece is really an event worth hearing.

Second the motion on the Goepfart. First movement is very nice, with transparent structure and enough challenges to keep it interesting; second movement doesn't seem to belong in the same piece as one and three -- oddly simple; third is very dense, a fugue, but will yield to careful playing.

A Reger Fugue, arranged by Rayner Brown; Seven Bagatelles by Schikele;
Four Fragments for WW quartet by Etler. The first is not difficult but perhaps not too interesting either, the second is easy but cute.

hey Natalie, the Schikele is available at Luyben, if you want to order it I'll go halves (to play with Casey and Alisa)... did you get my text about Villa Lobos? I'm fairly sure that's for fl/ob/cl/bsn. Btw is the Alex Taylor piece playable without conductor?

Are you allowed to do, and interested in doing, your own transcriptions? Something from Bach's Art Of The Fugue or Purcell's Fantazias For Viols would be a nice change of pace from the 20th century.
