 My new clarinet...

I just bought this clarinet. Photo attached.

Here is what you can do with it (although the model in the video is different it's the colour that does it... not the model) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ekx3unEYYWg

In my odds and ends box is a purple Cibaili Bb that I bought for $15. I'm not sure what purple clarinets do, but it sounds like a duck.

Fantastic horn, you'll show those snooty "symphony" people a thing or two!! A green clarinet and Beethoven's 'Pastorale," what could be better!

When I was a kid, I used to build those plastic model cars. They always came with sheets of decals, which you could use to make your finished model look like a hot rod (flames and scallop graphics), or a stock car racer (big round number decals), but I always used the "hot rod" decals on my student Noblet. I think the flame graphics and swooshes subtracted a couple of second from my 0-60mph times, but I'm not sure that Sousa sounded any better!

The plastic these clarinets are made from is very cheap and low density - probably best not to expose them to any sunlight at all otherwise you'd be left with a pile of green powder and a load of bendy keys.

I once had a blue bassoon, but decorum prevents me from explaining its considerable powers.

If the video is accurate, one of those would be really useful at the U.S. Congress now.

If the video exaggerates its power, then it might have a higher resale value in Ireland.

Some of the members of the George Mason University pep band had green clarinets a few years ago when they made the "final four." Unfortunately the magic didn't get them past the semi-finals.

"...then it might have a higher resale value in Ireland."

I tell ya, I'd like to take it to a few of our politicians and bankers!

Donald, as Chris says the link is in the first post and that's the purpose of the thread.

Thanks for the warning Chris, though I doubt it would ever be in the sun.

Re the one mentioned bought for $15, I imagine that was used. I bought mine new and it was $50. Some say these are terrible. For the price, the quality is actually very good. Actually for this price it's almsot hard to believe. The main problem is the 60mm barrel. Strange, since usually they copy common instruments and making a 65mm or 66mm barrel wouldn't really be more expensive. I have to open it so even some cork is showing to play in tune. Anyone knows a source for for green plastic rod to make a new barrel...?

(oops, that was terrible of me- i looked at the pic of the green clarinet, but didn't bother with the You Tube link so didn't realise it was, indeed, the green clarinet skit... sorry)

btw- as a gift to a colleague back in 2008 a friend and i got an old "throw away" clarinet from a school, took the keys off and spray painted it green, put the keys back on and presented it as "The green clarinet". The recipient still has it in her studio at NZSM.

Yes, the $15 Cibaili was bought at a garage sale along with a lawnmower, which is what I really wanted. The standard of the keywork is, as you say, quite good. It plays flat, and when I put a Yamaha C4 m/p on it, sounds better than you might suppose. I've donated it to an appeal for school instruments.

That is how to stand out at a college audition or concerto competition! The judges are sure to remember you! :)
