 Demonstrating the clarinet
Author: clarinetmom24

Hi! I'm new to the board. I will be demonstrating the clarinet to a large group of middle school children. I am wondering if anyone has any good ideas on what I should play? I would like it to be fun and maybe a bit flashy. Thanks!

Depends. Do you want it to be something they will recognise? Do you want it to be something they could aspire to play while still at school or something of an insane difficulty that will just blow their minds?

Never Bb, sometimes B#, and always B natural! ♫♪

I think I could go either way. It would be fun if they could recognize the piece, but a flashy example would be great too!

Golliwog's Cakewalk - Debussy and The Entertainer - Joplin are too fun ones I've played and the kids would probably know the tune. Although their difficulty is pretty low.

If you wanted to demonstrate the beautiful tone of the clarinet you can't go wrong with Mozart's Clarinet Conerto Second Movement.

Peter and the Wolf maybe? There's a chance that some would recognize it.

Yeah, Peter and The Wolf is one I knew at that age. It's a good idea.

I've recently used Pink Panther and Super Mario Brothers theme to demo clarinet with a fair bit of success :)

Oh! I love the idea of Super Mario Brothers. I think that is perfect! I'm off to google it now. Thanks!

If you want to go down the road of 'pop' tunes, you could try Hedwig's Theme from Harry Potter?

I think you should show off the instrument's range.

If you don't have something handy like a concerto that exploits the 3+ octave range, play 'em a chromatic scale.

Also, its dynamic range from pppp to fff (maybe).

I'd think the opening of Rhapsody in Blue would do the trick quite nicely! :)

Yes, the kids always recognize the slinky theme from Sampson and Delilah as a snake theme.

At demos, I've also always played the Rhapsody in Blue cadenza and the Peter and the Wolf cat theme.

With school cutbacks, the demos are less often. However, my granddaughter played the clarinet in Carnegie Hall this week with a school group from Kingsburg, CA.

Good Luck!

Peter and the Wolf, Rhapsody in Blue gliss - that's the top favorite, and the pink panther theme.

Once you've got their attention, you can play some "Clarinet music" ;)

Lady Packman (the 80's video game) used one of the Cleveland Orch Clarinet members for it's sound.

For real

I think one that would really show off the clarinet and the clarinetist and be known by many of the kids would be Paul Jean Jean's Carnival of Venice... or at least I think most of the kids might recognize it. In any case, it is a great piece and it really shows the clarinet off.

I like the Giampeiri Carnival of Venice even better.
