 Value Question
Author: Pastor Rob
Date:   2011-03-04 03:08

Last year I was given 5 old clarinets and two flutes. I have been fixing them up and giving them to kids whose parents can't afford to get them decent instruments. One is a Pierre Dumont which I was told probably hails from the early 60's. The wood grain is rich, dark and beautiful. The key work has the (presumed) nickel coating flaking off. All pads need replacing and every single ring on the instrument is loose. The key springs probably need to be replaced. Oddly enough the cork is in good shape. In short, I am guessing about a $500 restoration expense on an instrument brand characterized in a previous thread as being only marginal players. I woudn't mind a nice lamp, but the wood really is attractive on this clarinet. Can anyone give me any input whether this thing could ever be worth the cost of fixing it?
Thank you'
Rob

Hello Pastor,

Can you email me a photo of the clarinets? If I feel as though they can be fixed I'll repair them at cost for your church. This usually means about $15 plus postage.

Thanks for taking the interest in supporting music programs for your kids.

No way it will ever be worth more than $100, even restored, so Bob's offer is a really good one, IMO

Quite a few of the older european clarinets (even student/intermediate level) had beautiful grenadilla, finer than what I've seen on the newer professional clarinets. Unfortunatly that doesn't do much for present day value.

I just wanted to give props to Bob Bernardo for doing a fantastic job on that old clarinet. He went way above and beyond what he commited to on this instrument. It will probably be playing beautifully long after we are both gone. Thank you Bob!

Thank you folks. With the hard times we are having I believe I can fix up older clarinets and give students as well as pros a chance to play on a decent horn without suffering through problems with the horns; therefore if people simply can't afford to have a horn fixed I'll do what I can to make the horn play well. Most of the time these are for starving students and college students.

Many years ago when I was broke I couldn't afford summer lessons at Peabody under Gennusa. He gave me several lessons at no charge so I like to pass down his thoughtfulness to needed players, often at no charge for a great mouthpiece and a clarinet repair.

Thank you Pastor Rob for your nice compliments.
