Why doesn't Buffet make a student model bass?

This may be a dumb question, but it's something I've always wondered. I mean, most companies shell one out, for schools and such.

If Buffet could make a reasonable profit by it without sullying their reputation, they would. Since they don't it's reasonable to infer they can't.

Buffet used to make a student/intermediate model bass until fairly recently.

The bass clarinet Chris P is referring to (the Model 1180) was a single-register-vent design, which looked and played similarly to a Noblet, and was comparably overpriced in my opinion. Too pricey for a student, and not good enough for a professional.

Over the past few years I've had several students come in with Buffet 1180 bass clarinets. Generally they were not worthy of the Buffet name. The single register vent was not the problem: terrible intonation problems and poor fit and finish were! I think if Buffet had outsourced this product to Schreiber it would have been worth purchasing.

I think Tobin has it about right.

I agree completely about the 1180. When I first saw one, I kind of wondered to myself, if Buffet was going out of their way to make a wooden intermediate bass, why wouldn't they just slap on the double register vent? To save money, or to help it stay in adjustment easier, is my guess.
