More, including the Nielsen and Corigliano Concerto (though JC is not viewable without writting the NYPO)

These are a great resource but I still find them somewhat lacking. When I first heard about this library, I took a look through a bunch of the scores and realized just how much still exists in the conductor's head.

What I find most revealing are candid discussions with composers and/or conductors about what they *tried* to get the orchestra to do but did not succeed. Of course, that information is tough to get...!

Awesome! I definitely need to do some exploring of this archive. Has some stuff that IMSLP doesn't.

Story about the NY Philharmonic archive is here:

But as I read the information on the site, you can't download this material - it can only be viewed online with their reader and not saved to your own hard drive. A great deal of it is still under copyright protection.

Screen capture would work, but it's a lot of effort.

Not every Mac user realizes that the Mac OS comes with an easy-to-use screen capture utility (a small piece of software that allows you to "take a picture" of anything you see on your screen, saving it as an image file). The program is called Grab and is located in the Utilities folder (in Applications).

PS In the NYPO archive, some of the minutes from meetings are interesting. At a 1962 meeting, a committee considered George Szell's request to
cancel two of his four weeks as guest conductor, quoting him as saying, "The
older I get the fewer pieces I like." Funny how that is.

I know this is hopeless but...

PLEASE do not attempt to download the copyright music in this archive. I'm worried that if too many users misuse this opportunity the publishers will insist that their works be omitted, and we would all lose a precious resource.

We almost lost IMSLP due to publishers (actually, just one publisher- Universal) filing lawsuits. I'd hate for this to happen here.

I'm disappointed that some of the more respected members of this forum seem to be advocating this.

I agree. It's a wonderful resource for studying these scores, but it will only remain so for as long as it's not seen as a means of circumventing copyright laws by the copyright owners.

Wow I had no idea that the archive was so well done. Had read about it in the NYT last week. Loved the final quote in the article by Mitropoulos that "musicians are like children...they need to be spanked".
