Looking into barrels made by Al Hackel and Segal. Thoughts on these custom products? Compare to a Chadash, Muncy, or Moenning? Geeze....too many options................

I've just had Allan Segal make a barrel for me. I can't really compare it to anyone else's barrels because it's for a C clarinet and was custom made. But I can tell you the workmanship is excellent and the sound and response are first class.

Karl - May I ask what kind of C clarinet you had the barrel made for?
I am thinking of asking Mr. Segal to make a barrel for my Forte C clarinet. Busyness is the only reason I have not got around to asking him yet.

Thanks,

It's a Noblet. With my mouthpiece I needed a slightly shorter barrel than the one that came with the instrument. I sent the original to him so he could match the socket and bore dimensions.

Hello,

I have not heard of Hackel, but I have used Dr. Segal's barrels and they are excellent.

(Disclaimer - I am maker of Chedeville barrels)
I too have not heard, seen, or tried Hackel barrels but have had several custom barrels made by Allan Segal and they are excellent. He is easy to work with on your own personal desires and needs in a custom barrel and his workmanship is superb.

Allan has worked with me for a couple of years optimizing bores for hard rubber barrels which are quite different than wooden barrels and his intuition and experience was evident throughout the process.
He does receive payment from me for his work.

I have to agree, the Segal barrel is top quality. I began using one a month ago that he made for me for my Selmer Bb, really good. ESP http://eddiesclarinet.com

I had barrels made for me by Les Nicholas last year- he has a process where you make measurements of your mouthpiece and clarinet, and he customises a barrel to these measurements.
I instantly noticed an improvement in intonation that was obvious to my colleagues. The tone didn't instantly win me over compared to my other custom barrels, but what i noticed after a month was that the response and timbre were much more even than on my other barrels, allowing me to spend more energy on tone. Thus, even if the barrel didn't magically change my sound, the end result was clearly an improvement.
(to be fair- by "no improvement" i mean this compared to other custom barrels that had been hand selected)
