I am interested in buying an open holed alto clarinet to fix up for myself. I want one because I have large hands, i think that I might like the feel of it, less pads and easier to work on. Can anyone tell me if there are any drawbacks to an open hole? I was told by an older clarinet player in my community band that open hole ones are no good.
Thanks,

Ring key altos mean less sticking pads if that's what's been installed! Just played my alto for a bit earlier today and the LH main action pads got worse as I went on, then stopped sticking when I let it rest for a while. I'll probably change them for cork pads. It was repadded before I bought it but they used the plastic coated brown leather pads that are notorious for sticking - not a bad repad job, but they were at the mercy of the pads they used.
Amati are the only company currently offering a ring key alto clarinet that I know of, but that only goes to low E - probably based on the old Selmer altos. They do a plateau model that looks like it's based on the Yamaha alto.

The student model Bundy altos are or were open hole types and are inexpensive. With a good overhaul, good mouthpiece, and undercutting of the toneholes, they can be acceptable instruments. However, they are not competitive with the first line Selmer, Buffet, or Leblanc instruments. Sometimes, these better alto clarinets can be bought for low prices at auctions and will fit large hands like mine. Good luck!

Thank you for all of the input guys. I also had some of those crappy leather pads that would cause mt register key to not open. Once I get a nice alto I might put some Valentinos on like I have on my bass. I haven't seen the Amati open holes yet, thanks.
I am attending Western Iowa Tech for Band Instrument Repair. I began in August 2010. I mostly play clarinet, but like to mess around with anything musical. I've played soprano, alto, and bass in several ensembles.
