The rottenest part of that story is that the dealer knew he was destroying stolen goods. A band member alerted this dealer about the instruments stolen from the band room and asked him to look out for anyone trying to fence them -- and *then* the dealer, who'd already bought the instruments, had them crushed. Glad to hear the creep's off to the slammer.

In a related story, a local percussionist's house was broken into here. The thieves dismantled his set of timpani and stole only the copper kettles.

Sadly this kind of stuff happens whenever the price of scrap metal gets high. Unfortunately most scrap dealers have a reputation for not asking questions about the "scrap" they purchase. Some thieves made off with several bronze memorial plaques from the town center of my home town a few years ago and they were never recovered despite the fact that such an item should be easily identifiable as being stolen by any scrap dealer.
