Sadly this kind of stuff happens whenever the price of scrap metal gets high. Unfortunately most scrap dealers have a reputation for not asking questions about the "scrap" they purchase. Some thieves made off with several bronze memorial plaques from the town center of my home town a few years ago and they were never recovered despite the fact that such an item should be easily identifiable as being stolen by any scrap dealer.
