There appear to be a large quantity of Buffet B12’s from China, which have questionable authenticity. They range in price from $9.99 to 166.00...

That'll be the "2010 NEW ''BUFFET' Bb12 clarinet with serial No1083156" no less! Looks just like the genuine article oh I don't think.
I just had a look for fake Yamahas - they're no longer there.

I've seen evidence on eBay (and elsewhere) that some non-musicians use the term "Buffet" to mean "clarinet" in the same way that many folks use the trade name "Xerox" to mean "copier". In this particular case , maybe they're just trying to attract attention to their ad by using a well-known keyword. On the other hand, perhaps they are in fact trying to sell fraudulent fake Buffets.

I laughed when i saw this- what REALLY gives it away as a fake (other than the case) is the free screwdriver that somehow the Chinese cheap clarinet fraternity imagine every student needs...

And it's a Buffet Bb12 clarinet too!
The screwdriver supplied will no doubt have a tip so soft that it'll probably bend or twist just by adjusting the nylon screw on the throat G# key.

Of course it will, Chris. Lead is very soft!

Donald,
Besides the free screw driver, they B12 is missing under the logo on the upper joint...
David,
They maybe trying to attract attention with their ad, but it looks like they're also trying to attract attention with the logo as well...

I usually look at the case, though it can just be a replacement. At least they aren't trying to sell it with the carbon-fiber looking case.
Also I look at the cork on the bottom of the Eb side key. It's usually extra thick on Chinese clarinets.
I don't see why they would bother leaving the Buffet logo off the top joint...

There are a lot of fakes but actual Buffet plastic models are made in China now for a while. Maybe some of the fakes are actually made by the same factories, who knows (this sometimes happen with other products, factories stealing a design and selling it). But maybe it will change back now that Buffet bought Schreiber.

That price is too, too low. Something is very wrong somewhere, but be carefull in judgment because I just bought an alto sax (while in Shanghai) for $380 and to date it is almost identical to my Yamaha alto, which cost about $2200 3yrs ago. The tone is great and I can`t see anything that is going to fall off in the near future.

Genuine Buffet B12s (and Schreiber-built E11s) don't have 'Made in France' on them.

Is it not mandatory to have the country of manufacture stamped on the instrument?

I'm surprised these don't come with a second barrel and a small pair of white gloves.
Just wait until these start showing up in the secondary market. Hoo-wee! That will be great fun for students to find they have a knock-off. I'd rather have a genuine Cecilio/Mendini/Cibaili than a fake Buffet. But, I'd much rather have a real second-hand Buffet.

Chris,
Actually, there are several of these questionably authentic Buffet B12’s which do have the Buffet logo on the upper joint, but are still missing the “B12” beneath the logo. Some of these cso’s are still in the plastic wrapping…

Just found the offending article (see attached photo), and this one has the logos almost as would be seen on a B12 (without the 'Made in France' bit but the top joint doesn't have B12 on it) - but again, clearly not a B12 in any shape or form.
So I've gone and reported all these fake B12s listed on there.

I reported fake B12's for weeks and not one was ever taken down. I finally gave up and reported them to Buffet. About a month later they all disappeared. I assumed it was Buffet filing VERO claims, but who knows? However, they have been popping back up recently. The auction place seems to have no conscience when it comes to fakes. All they want is their cut, no questions asked.
Only Buffet can put a stop to them, and they need to. Not only is it costing them money, but their brand name is going to suffer as the inaccurate word spreads about how bad Buffet student horns have become.

Hi All,
Has anyone ever tried one of these? I know counterfiting is wrong but they being out there is a fact of life. My wife once bought a knockoff Louie Vuitton bag that was great. As someone said above maybe the manufacturer of the legit B12 in China makes one for Buffet and one for the auction.
I'm trying one out. Should get it in a few weeks and I'll let you know how it plays. Hey, if it plays like a decent 150.00 clarinet. I'll be happy.

Depending on the jurisdiction you're living in, importing of counterfeit merchandise is subject to fining, and travelling abroad with such an item can be quite an adventure.
If I had $150 to burn, I'd buy something better than a clarinet with spelling errors on their logos...

One can buy a B12 used from music stores at $150...
I do agree with Clarnibass that there must be some number of B12/B10 which are derived from the parts of the instruments being made in China by Buffet and are sold piecemeal in this fashion. We know for certain that keyworks for the starter line Buffet have been manufactured in China, so it is not beyond the stretch of imagination that the tier 2 OEMs would make use of this in creating close to original knock-offs. Such has been done in the fashion world after all.

I spotted a counterfeit today and reported it. I have noticed that for the price mentioned above, you could actually track down an e flat clarinet. If you are going to buy a CSO, why not make it a very short CSO?
