 What is he playing?

Here is a clip of Jose French-Ballestra:

Does anyone know what he is model of Clarinet he is playing? The sound is quite appealing.

I suspect a Selmer Privilege with some sort of Bakun barrel and bell. Anyone else care to take a shot.

Chris.

It's a Leblanc product with jump trill keys and LH Eb/Ab lever.

Legacy?

It's a Leblanc Backun instrument with a MoBa barrel and bell. I think it's the Symphonie rather than the Legacy, since, viewing it in HD and full-screen, I don't see the LH Ab/Eb lever, or a third set of posts in the left little finger group to hold it.

Dynamite playing.

The second half of the piece is at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xh38aSVxBVQ.

He puffs his cheeks a lot, and lets his throat expand. It's not for circular breathing, since I don't hear him doing that except at the very end. Presumably it's to provide more space for resonance. Remember Tony Pay's interesting sequence of postings on Prof. Wheeler's article, including an artificial clarinet embouchure. Apparently with enough resonance space, everything sounded good without further effort.

Who was Franch-Ballester's teacher, and where did he learn this?

Ken Shaw

I read he did some study at Curtis, presumably most of his development would have been prior to this.

He's played for Ricardo Morales quite a bit, too.

The sound his clarinet produces (or *he* does) is pretty much the same as that of my old Leblanc Concerto clarinets without the Backun custom gear. So given that, plus the characteristic "jumper" side trill keys, it's a Leblanc clarinet. Personally, while it is a good sound, I prefer the sound--tone quality--of the Buffet clarinet. Nonetheless, great playing......although, as "Dog" Randy Jackson might comment, "A bit pitchy at times".

Ken's right. I watched it in HD full screen and there is no LH lever.

The Legacy that Eddie Daniels is photographed with has no LH lever. Maybe it was an option earlier on.
