 Daphnis Eb Fingerings (Doodle section)
Author: eofung

Hi there -

I'm just wondering what everyone else does at m.168 in Daphnis et Chloe (No.2) in the Eb part. Do people actually switch pinkies on the B in D#-B-C#-D#?

Thanks!
Erin

I slide the left hand pinky from the B to C#.

I'd take the D# on the right,
then take B on the left,
then slide to C# on the left,
then take D# on the right :)

I just fake it the best I can. Well actually, since I play bass when we do it I really don't have to worry about that, I have enough to worry about.
Really though, try it as many ways as possible and use the one that works best for you. The above suggestions are the way I used to play it too when I learned that part. ESP http://eddiesclarinet.com

Of all uses for the D clarinet, the "doodle" section of Daphnis (as you rightly call it) might be the best. If you know someone who has a D clarinet, ask to borrow it for Daphnis. Using the D clarinet removes all the sharps from the key signature.
If you are thinking of becoming an Eb clarinet player, you could do a lot worse than invest in a used or less-expensive D clarinet (like a Buffet E11).

When I have a D#-B-C#-D# passage, I do it like this-
D# right, slide to B right, C# left, D# right.
This kinds of figure comes up now and then so I have gotten used to doing it like this.
