I've put my MacBook Pro in the expandable pocket of my case but it adds a ton of weight to case and I'm constantly worried that I'll damage my mac. However, I think with the emergence of the iPad from Apple that it might be the perfect portable internet consumption device to have along in the case since it only weighs 1.5 pounds and the charger is also light and portable. Furthermore I think it is a bit more durable like the iPhone is.
Maybe the days of hauling a book bag and a clarinet case on public trans are over!

"larger screen" and "more durable" are somewhat mutually exclusive.
A simple cheap netbook might be adequate enough for while on the road.

Really? I hope your MacBook/iPad/Instruments are all insured... Having so many important things in one "convenient" case seems like it would be a nightmare if it were stolen...

For what it's worth, I got a MacBook Air because I travel a lot and the Air is very thin and light (no optical drive) and it fits wonderfully in my Marcus Bonna double (actually triple) case.

The iPad is too small to be an effective full page stand mounted music reader. I"ve been using a Motion Computing LE1600 (older, but light, great battery life, and perfect for a digital music stand) for that purpose. I'll take my 12.1 inch touch screen over the 8 inch iPad screen any day. Particularly given that I only paid 150 bucks for my solution.

Oh my ~ triple case??? Where do you get one of those. I would really benefit as I have three clarinets ~ A, Bb and C!

Had a few people remarking on the Bonna cases, and we've had considerable success with selling them, so much so the last two orders we have received sold out in a week. Our next batch is due to arrive around mid July.

Your nitpicking point taken, but my point remains. Don't get me wrong, the iPad is a cool piece of technology, just not the right one for this purpose. It falls way short in another area as well - annotations. Try as you might, you just can't draw in a sharp or a crescendo with your fingertip. You really need a stylus based digitizer type of input device for some of the important everyday requirements of a digital stand.
Interestingly enough, I've been thinking a lot about this - maybe because so many mac sheep have been coming up to me all excited about the possibility of using an iPad for on stand sheet music (until I explain to them the issues and show them my solution) I think I'm going to put together a web page reviewing all of the potential hardware/software solutions in this area all in one place, along with assumptions and requirements for a digital music stand as a general information piece.

Digital music stands are awful. I freelanced with a Symphony orchestra that used them and it was a nightmare. During the concert whilst I was turning the page via the foot pedal the thing decided to go back 2 pages. I had big solo coming up and luckily I played it from memory whilst the stupid stand got back to the right page. You can't beat the printed page in my opinion.

The regular Bonna double case has a section that if you remove the removable dividers, an Eb clarinet fits *perfectly* in that section with a bit of foam at each end. I travel with the three instruments a lot like that.
For opera I put my C clarinet in that same section as well. The two sections of the C clarinet overlap so I separate them with bubble wrap.
After owning a slew of cases over the years, the Bonna is by far the best case I have owned in terms of intelligent design and quality of construction.
It is the smallest double case I have owned yet its music compartment holds oversize music (plus a laptop). Its accessory compartment is big enough as well.
*Plus* the parts inside the case that hold the instrument are adjustable (you can change their position because they attach by velcro). When I travel with one modern instrument and one classical instrument which does not have a detachable bell, I can change the internal configuration so the classical instrument fits securely.

I use an iPad extremely effectively as a digital music reader. Mounted on a RAT Jazz stand using velcro, the standard photo viewer is extremely effective for organising music.
While I concede that it's not A4 size - it's roughly the same size as a miniature Real Book and as such is perfectly legible. I use it for playing functions and other events where I don't wish to carry 6 real book volumes around plus assorted other bits of music.
It's backlit - no stand light needed even in the darkest of conditions, and the internal memory is large enough to hold all the music I am ever likely to need in this situation. Annotations are a mute point for me - everything is marked up prior to being scanned in.
Regarding foot pedals, I'm with Peter. I've used those stands and find them a nightmare. The swipe feature on the iPad is extremely good for turning pages.
