Any recommendations for a basic case for a bass clarinet?
I picked up my new 60 year-old bass clarinet along with it's original case earlier today. The instrument is in good shape but the case has definitely seen better days and I'd like to replace it with something that isn't falling apart.
The clarinet is a Pedler Custombuilt and is a 5-piece setup. That being said, I have heard (but can't confirm) that the upper joint on Pedler BC's is longer than normal on won't fit in standard 5-piece cases without modifications so I may be concentrating on cases for 1 piece body instruments. Unfortunately none of my local music shops carry cases for bass clarinets so I'm going to have to mail order one. Any advice you can give would be appreciated.

A number of mail-order places carry a generic bass clarinet case made by DEG which has movable blocks inside, so it can be set up to fit any low-Eb bass with a two-piece body.

I have a ProTec one-piece case. The same model as you can see at Weiner Music. It is light and appears to be protective. And it's inexpensive.

Thanks for the replies. I'll look into the DEG and Pro-Tec cases. It's doubtful that I'll be doing any significant traveling with my bass so I can't justify spending the extra money on one of those nice BAM cases.

I recently posted about a Pelican equipment case that I set up as a triple Eb, Bb and Alto clarinet case. Sometihing like that would, I think, work well for a bass. The case comes filled with a diced foam. You basically pluck out as much foam as required to leave recesses to fit all the instrument pieces. The cost of my case was under $150 USD.

Thanks for the tip. I ended up buying a new DEG case. If I ever end up buying a low-C bass I'll probably opt for a better case. Naturally I'd need to land a seat in one of the local orchestras before I'd consider doing that and seeing the level of competition I'm up against that probably won't be happening anytime soon.

Jim - that is a very elegant solution!
I did a similar thing with a Platt case from Jensen Tools. The supplied, cubed foam didn't meet my needs, but an upholstery company supplied a couple of layers of high-density foam. You can trim this with X-Acto knives, but an electric kitchen knife will do it quicker.

John - thanks for pointing out that bass gig bag. I bike to all my rehs and concerts and the Buffet case is murder going up hills. I didn't know they made gig bags for bass. Two questions:
- Can you fit a single Bb clarinet case in the outside pocket of the gig bag? If so, might it damage the bass through the material?
- The site quotes the price of the low C bass gig bag at $290. Is that what they sell for in stores in NYC?

Yes, a hard Clarinet case would damage the Bass in the Altieri gig bag, so that's a no-no.
But I've wrapped the individual pieces of my Bb in towels and fit them inside the roomy gig bag, neat trick!

I paid under $200 in Jimmy Yan's shop in NYC 10 years ago, so that may be their new price?
