 How to Cope with Waiting
Author: xpedx7342

Hello everybody. I've been having trouble this week waiting for my audition ersults to be mailed, and I feel that the way I'm going at it, it's not healthy. I'm assuming that many of you have auditioned for many youth orchestras, proffesional orchestras, universities and colleges, and many other places. Anxiety definitely is a huge thing in the final days of waiting, but how do you cope with the last few days waiting for the results?

A couple of beers or a good bottle of wine helps. ESP http://eddiesclarinet.com

Just find something to distract you from those thoughts whenever they arise.

I'll join Eddie and Weberfan and watch you stress!

What was your audition for? The reason for asking is to prepare yourself for other possible auditions. This will help you to forget about the results; having other options.

I find the best thing is to occupy yourself with a new project, whether clarinet-related or not. Just don't be that person who emails and phones constantly asking for results... I've been on the other end and it doesn't make you get them any sooner!

Yes, do something. Start a trio. WRITE a trio. Buy an amplifier, distortion pedal, and contact mic and play some metal. Play on street corners, and do it WITHOUT a hat out for money. Go to a cafe and listen to a local band play.

There's so much more to music than the "practice for audition - audition - wait for audition results" cycle. Don't fall into that.

Good question because we all spend our lives waiting for something and dealing with anxiety. Do something! Physical activity often will break the mental trap you create for yourself with worry. The more you let your brain worry, the more real those thoughts become to you even they are nothing more than thoughts. Wash the car, wash the dog, go for a run, bike, just move. Even housework counts and can be strangely soothing. But get active!

Go to your local bookstore or Amazon and get Eloise Ristad's "A Soprano on Her Head," http://www.amazon.com/Soprano-Her-Head-Right-Side-Up-Performances/dp/0911226214. I guarantee you'll be enthralled and completely distracted from your uncertainty about the audition results.

Also, whether you go to Curtis or Oshkosh, there will be people who play better than you, and a teacher who knows more than you. If you're human, you'll come out a thousand miles ahead of where you are now, and someplace very different from what you expected.
