It depends on who "they" is. M would be the shortest, and L the longest.

The distance from the tip openning of the mouthpiece to the point where the mouthpiece and reed come together. If this distance is short, you take in less mouthpiece than if this distance is long. Players who prefer a longer facing usually stay that way and vice versa.

Thanks for the quick response, though I my emboucher seems to say differently. I have two that require taking in MUCH LESS mouthpiece than say a B45 or M15.
Maybe measurements really don't tell us ANYTHING !!!
And just by way of explanation, I wanted to compare to the facing length of the new Pomarico Black Crystal. In a reply from Pomarico (in broken English) I was informed that the Black Crystal "Sun" facing is 15mm long. I thought this to be far to short for me to consider, but thought I'd work up to it (or down to it, however you look at it) via the B40. Now the measurements as presented are just giving me a headache.

The GBK link goes back to 2003.
Then he was extolling his Chedeville.
Now he uses a crystal mouthpiece.
Wonder what it will be in 2017....oh, wait...the world ends in 2012...nevermind.

I used the Chedeville for a few years but no matter what combinations of reeds, ligatures or barrels it always seemed to play a bit bright for me.
I had a student who REALLY wanted the Chedeville so I sold it. He sounds fine on it with a traditional set up, so perhaps it was me.
Alas I'm back to the original 40 year old Vandoren crystals.
(I have a nice Borbeck and a Kaspar but have not yet spent enough time on them to play them in public.)
However...the year is still young
