 Clarinet Technicians in California

Does anyone know a good repair technician in California to take a look at some of my clarinets?

The few technicians in my area are not very good.

Daniel Deitch ((415) 221-2735) in San Francisco is terrific. (You may get bumped, as I did, when Richard Stoltzman is in town and needs quick work done!)

In Sacramento, I've used Baldwin Wong ((916) 278-6716) with whom I've been very satisfied. He's on the payroll at Sac State and does all their instruments, but he does others in his free time.

If you are in the Los Angeles area go to John Peterson of RDG Woodwinds.

I've had good work done at RDG, both by John Peterson and Levi Tracy.

I also very highly recommend Angela Wells (full disclosure: we're in a relationship, but I'd still take my clarinets to her even if, heaven forbid, we were to have a nasty breakup), at www.reedery.com.

I also have had good success with Tom Yaeh of RDG Woodwinds. Yes, there are three clarinet techs there. Although, Tom Yaeh does charge a pretty penny for his services because of his labor charges, however he does a HELL of a job. I'm going to try Levi or John next time I need some extensive work done.

Also, not to hijack the thread, but does Clark Fobes still do repairs on instruments? And, if so, how is his repair service? Just curious.

Clark no longer does repairs. He might do some for close friends. He is too busy with his mouthpiece business. Many people have told me Clark's tech abilities are as good as it gets.

That's too bad about Clark Fobes because he definitely is a master, a God, when it comes to clarinet accessories and I'd expect him to be just as good with clarinet repair. Oh well. I'm definitely trying John Peterson next time.

I guess I'll go with Daniel Dietch. I was going to go up to San Francisco in a few weeks anyways. Thanks for all the replies!

Some years back there was a very fine technician working in Demarest, NJ. His name was Herb Kleeman (not to be confused with Herb Blayman) and his work was excellent. He packed up and moved to the Santa Barbara area. I don't know if he's still working or even still there but he would be worth looking for.

Here is another thumbs up for Daniel Deitch...very, very good.

I've also had a good experience with Tom Yeh.
