Burt Hara and the NY Phil
Author: Adrian
Date:   2010-01-22 16:39

The NY Philharmonic concert featuring Burt Hara's guest appearance as principal clarinet in Rachmaninoff's 2nd symphony was broadcast last night on WQXR in New York.

The orchestra was sublime. Mr. Hara's sound was gorgeous.

Is there anywhere I can view this concert? Will a channel be playing it again? My youth orchestra is playing Rachmaninoff's 2nd with Symphony Nova Scotia next month, and I'd love to hear that performance!

I've heard Burt play live here in Madison and he is a remarkably expressive musician with a big wonderful sound. He could play any chair, anywhere....

This is an excellent concert. The second mvt. solo was beautifully played. Very well executed high C-D connection! This is definitely no small feat in this high pressure situation! Very warm and lively sound as well.

(Disclaimer: This is splitting hairs a bit, but just wanted to see if my ears were deceiving me or not!)

On an more critical note: did anyone else notice throat tones being somewhat flat throughout? My first thought was that the orchestra tunes to 442 and he usually tunes to 440. My second thought was that he plays a 13 series mouthpiece which can cause these notes to be a bit flat compared to the rest of the range.

I'm coming out of lurkdom to chime in on how wonderful Burt Hara is. I saw him in Minneapolis. He is absolutely fantastic. His tone is soooo smooth. I was so impressed on how clear and pure his sound is when playing quietly, oh so quietly in some spots. And the masterful technique to play the whole range of notes without a hint of transition. To me, the high notes have as beautiful tone as the low notes. Just gorgeous.

The backstage tuner at the MN Orch was set to 442 when I played with a dance group in front of the Orchestra for a kiddie concert series.
