 Marching instrument maintenance
Author: Tracey

Hi,

Well, I've been in marching band for a while, using the same great plastic Vito that I've used in intermediate school, and I think it's starting to get a little dirty. Does anyone have any suggestions for cleaning out clarinets that have been through marching seasons? Well, I guess I could ask, how can I clean any clarinets normally? Also, if I wanted to lend it out, how I can I clean it so that they would be able/want to use it? Thanks.

It's funny. When I wanted to use my plastic Artley again for college pep band after it had sat for 3 years in it's case, it looked ugly! The inside was so gross and disgusting! Anyway the plastic clarinet is like any wooden instrument you would use. Swab it out and it's clean. I think I even used a Q-tip to clean the tone holes. No problem. It sounds great. Also, if any of the holes have the spit problem, I clean them with dollar bills. Just clean a plastic clarinet the same way you would clean you're precious expensive wooden clarinet and you'll be fine!

TRACEY:

YOU EVIDENTLY HAVE VIOLATGED ONE OF THE FUNDAMENTAL RULES OF INSTRUMENT MAINTENANCE — CLEAN UP EACH TIME AFTER PLAYING!!! I have two clarinets - a very old Buffet and an almost as old Selmer. The insides of these instrument look almost as good now as they did the day they were purchased, and they are over 50 years old! The outsides do not, however, because they are made of German silver and have a tendency to turn brown over the years. However, I do REGULARLY clean, oil, etc. them on a scheduled basis. You take care of the instrument and the instrument will perform well for many, many years. This is one of the things I teach all of my beginners and it has worked for years.

Take heart, they can be restored to reasonable condition IF you begin cleaning and taking care of them on a regular basis.

Good luck.

Grrr...

I SWAB my clarinet every time I use it. What I meant was I wanted to know the way that I could clean out or perform general maintenance on it since it has been through some rain, dirt, etc. I really mostly wanted to know how to clean it enough so that I can lend it to someone else.
