That tune can become somewhat trite and repetitive if it is played/sung too legato.
It may help to understand the phrasing if you can read the words by Christina Rossetti. Go ahead and just sing the tune or play it and hear the words in your head as you play. I hope that your band teacher gave you some ideas; more than just to get other opinions. Good luck.
