My high school band is playing, In the Bleak Midwinter and there is a 16 measure clarinet solo in it. This solo is completely unaccompanied except for a few little triangle things from the percussion section. The solo is marked to be played "lamenting."The solo is in the throat tones of the instrument. My band teacher was unsatisfyed with my style that I used and suggested that I get other opinions on how to play it. Technically, this solo is very easy, it's just one time through the melody of In the Bleak Midwinter. So I'm asking all of your opinions on how you would approch the style of this solo.

That tune can become somewhat trite and repetitive if it is played/sung too legato.
It may help to understand the phrasing if you can read the words by Christina Rossetti. Go ahead and just sing the tune or play it and hear the words in your head as you play. I hope that your band teacher gave you some ideas; more than just to get other opinions. Good luck.

Eriks,
Todd's suggestion to read (or better sing) the words is excellent. I've sung this many times (about every other Christmas) as our church choir director likes it quite a bit. It is one of the quieter carols. (Not everything can or should be "Joy to the World.") I suggest a smooth though not legato approach being careful to carry through each phrase just as a singer would.
Good luck and Happy holidays!
Jim
