 Clark Fobes Mouthpieces

Thought about buying one for my Contra Alto. Are they a pretty good mouthpiece, compared to Grabner or Vandoren?

I haven't played the contra mouthpieces. Any that I have played by Clark (clar, bass, Eb) are all excellent. I would also consider Grabner. They are very good. I would think that while a Vandoren may be fine, either of the other two are in a different league.

There are all good mouthpieces, you have to try them to see which is best for you. ESP http://eddiesclarinet.com

Ed is of course correct. But I can tell you that I own a Selmer Model 40 Rosewood Contra-alto on which I have used the Fobes and Grabner mpcs. Both are excellent, but for me, the Grabner produces or allows me to produce a bigger, fatter sound!

By bigger fatter sound do you mean louder?

Sorry if that was a dumb question.

It is not a dumb question, but what sounds a certain way to me may not to you. Thus Ed's post is correct, you will have to try them both.

If you go to Walter's website you'll see this quote:

“Got the Contra-alto mouthpiece yesterday and tried it out. It is fantastic!! Big, rich, fat sound! When I got (former mouthpiece) I have been using for about two years and compared it to the Selmer C* the horn came with, I thought, wow what an improvement! Now after putting yours through it's paces, I can say, wow what an improvement. Thanks a lot!"

I said that and stand by it today! I believe the one I have is the prototype and both Walter and I were very, very pleased with the way it turned out.

Regards,

LCL
