I bought this clarinet on a whim. I play Artie Shaw numbers with a local Dance Band and this Clarinet appeared to be reminiscent of one that he played with his Gramercy 5. So I bought it.
It is a Standard Boehm Buffet, one of which was previously mentioned on this BBoard.
I don't know if Artie's Buffet Clarinet had a one piece top section or whether he had a standard ringless barrel.
Anyway, I cannot make out the serial numbers but the other one mentioned here was from 1896. Mine may be later.
I thought I should share this. I believe that the original Buffet which Artie Shaw played is in the UK, and actively being played.

I've seen photos of a few Buffets like this, but they were certainly not common.
The serial number will be on the back of the instrument, probably at the bottom of the upper joint, or perhaps the lower one. They were often quite lightly stamped. Scrub the area with an old, dampened toothbrush to clean out the crud. Then go to http://www.woodwind.org/clarinet/Equipment/HowOld/Buffet.html to determine the manufacturing date.
The design was probably make possible because longer grenadilla billets were available at the time.
I think Artie Shaw mostly played on a Conn, but I'm no expert on his equipment. Can you provide a link to the picture you refer to?

No. It was not advertised as an alto clarinet.
It is the same size as my R-13 and it plays as a Bb Soprano LP.
