I know there's a lot on this already that's been discussed, but I feel that my old Rovner Dark that I've played doesn't really cut it any more. My sound/tone is really inflexible and staccatos doesn't feel as crisp as it could. I asked my teacher about it, and she said I might like the BG Super Revelation, or maybe a Vandoren Optimum. However, we couldn't talk for long as she had to leave. What are the different characteristics of these different ligs? And with the BG, is there much of a difference between brass, silver and gold?
Oh, and I know ligatures depend on mouthpiece and reed preference. I play an M30 with 3.5 Rico Reserves.
And, I'm headed to the Boston Conservatory Clarinet Day this weekend with the clarinet studio of the university I'm probably going to next year. What can I expect from it? I've never been, and I don't really know anything about it! Might I be able to try out some ligatures there?

If you're looking for more flexibility the BG Leather\metal ligatures would be a step in the right direction. They still require some work for a good stac. articulation compared to all metal ligatures like the Bonade or Kaspar, but more responsive than rovner.
If you generally like the rovner, you can try one of the many other rovner ligatures that they produce. The eddie daniels has metal touching the reed, and may provide you with a little more pop to the sound than the dark one. The vandoren Leather ligature is also good.

We just had a masterclass here at USF with Michael Dean, and he recommended the BG, but not the super. He likes the regular BG revelation better than the gold version. He had a clarinetist try and what a different it made in sound and ease of production. I know around here a lot of people like the "floating rail" lig too. Personally, I use a regular rovner but I invert it so the screw is on the bottom.
(he also recommended trying at least 20 of the same ligature because every one will be different.)
Happy Hunting!

The BC Clarinet Day is a very nice event. Great performances and masterclasses, some good vendors, and very nice people. I wish I could go this year!

The Boston Conservatory day is a great event. The master classes are very informative and you will learn a lot. Not sure if the vendors there will bring ligatures.
Check the vendors on teh web site, vandoren will probably be there, with things to try...

When was the last time you cleaned and greased the metal parts of your Rovner? If you haven't done it recently, you might notice a big improvement. Just a thought
Best regards,

I use a BG Revelation which is my favorite lig. I also have a 1974ish Bonade inverted, Vandoren Optimum, 1980s Harrison, misc Rovners, Vandoren Klassik and i'm sure a bunch more i can't recall the brands of.
My #2 is the Bonade inverted

I would recommend trying the Regular (non-inverted) Bonade. Very free sound, with great articulation.

My recommendation goes to the Rovner Mark III. It's inexpensive like the Dark, though the tone is indeed more crisp, yet nice and robust. I also find articulation a breeze with the much improved response.

As the Director of the Boston Conservatory's Clarinet Day, it will be a pleasure to welcome you to Boston. I hope you'll have a terrific time!! Thanks to those who commented on our event, much appreciated.
About ligatures... there will be a couple of vendors with ligatures to try but I'm also happy to help you try more from my own personal stock if you'd like. I have quite a bit and am happy to help you in any way that I can.
Please let me know. You can email me off the BBoard to make certain or have Wesley get in touch with me. Looking forward to seeing you and safe travels!
All the best,

Just wanted to say thanks for all the suggestions everybody. Boston was awesome and amazing and I can't wait to (hopefully) go back next year! The performances were fantastic and I learned so much. Anyway, Mr Norsworthy let me try some ligatures while I was there and I settled on the BG Super Revelation with the help of my clarinet teacher. While I couldn't buy one there, the local music store here actually had one in stock when I got home. (Kind of a shock, really, because they hardly ever have anything...) I find that the sound is a bit more focused and compact, as well as extremely resonant in the upper clarion and a tad less shrill, and articulation comes more easily.
Thanks!
Anna
