 Summer Music Festival
Author: Ryan K
Date:   2009-09-17 03:31

I attend Dickinson College (small liberal arts school), and study under Beth Stimpert (Member of Alarm will Sound), from a summer studying from Thomas Thompson.

So, I'm looking for summer Music festivals to apply too. Without trying to quantify my ability, I'll say that the Weber One/Two are about where my playing is, on the whole.

What are my Music Festival options for the summer? Preferably Orchestra. I'm really new at this, so any advice will help. I'm willing to travel a bit.

Look into the Eastern Music Festival in Greensboro NC. I taught there years ago and it's a very good orchestral training music festival for high school and college students. The clarinet faculty are well qualified too. ESP http://eddiesclarinet.com

Ryan,

Have you looked into the Hartwick Summer Music Festival in Oneonta, NY? That's a great place to go for instrumentalists of all ages and you can go for 2, 4 or 6 weeks. It offers private lessons, chamber music and band/orchestra participation.

NC School of the Arts has a summer festival orchestral program.

Also, look into the Pennsylvania Summer Arts Institute (PAI) in or near Wilkes-Barre, PA. A lot like Hartwick.

If you're a senior, you can look into the National Symphony Orchestra Summer Music Institute (SMI) in Washington, D.C. It's a 3 week program that offers lessons with NSO members, as well as chamber music and orchestral music.

These are programs both I attended, and students of mine have attended. Hope some of these are what you're looking for! Good luck!
