Very funny reading:

http://billanschell.com/documents/Careers_in_jazz_002.pdf

This article pokes fun at the jazz condition, but it may very well (and unfortunately) apply to classical musicians.

I know a few examples of all those people in the article.

Wow, 1% make it in jazz, that's a lot better than classical for clarinet players, at least for symphony hopefuls. What a great profession if you can make it, and than many of those are not happy doing what they do. I love it though. ESP http://eddiesclarinet.com

Here's a chart of Best Undergrad College Degrees By Salary:

Music is fourth from the bottom, paying more than theology, elementary education, and social work.

My guess would be that the salary figures indicate how much a music major makes at whatever job they end up doing, such as accounting or TV/VCR repair.

Survey of salaries is for people possessing a Bachelor's degree only, and "may be skewed toward large universities;" probably not the most accurate survey as far as musicians are concerned.

At any rate, I wasn't trying to resurrect the "it's tough to get a gig" thread. The article is meant to be humorous.
