When playing double lip is it adviseable that one solos standing up or sitting down? I've noticed that using double lip my tone, when i get nervous, has a tendency to waiver... mind you i got nervous using single lip but now i can hear the nervousness in my sound! how can i overcome this?

??? ... it DOES seem that many double-lip players prefer to play sitting down. Tom Ridenour does. (he told us that at a Master Class recently) Harold Wright certainly did. A neck strap sounds like a nice "steady" idea! mw

Keil:
Don't be impatient. It takes quite a while to develop the strength and endurance necessary to perform standing up with a double-lip embouchure. If performing standing up is important to you, you certainly can do it double-lip. I usually perform concertos sitting down, but I did do the Mozart Concerto standing up last summer.

I too have had a tough time playing double lip while standing and imagine that it's much easier for a player who played double lip from day one to do so. However, as was mentioned earlier, many double lip players perform sitting down... particularly the orchestral clarinetists. Even Robert Marcellus, who played single lip performed the Mozart Concerto and Debussy Rhapsody with the Cleveland Orchestra sitting down. That says a lot. I feel that if the sound is drastically different and worse when you stand up as opposed to sitting down, why struggle. After all, you want to feel comfortable and sound as good as possible... who cares if you're sitting down! If you're interested in more name dropping, Ralph McClane who played double lip performed the Copland Concerto sitting and Harold Wright performed seated as well.
