 Ligatures

I have read on this site about using string or shoe laces as ligatures and would like to try it out. How do you actually do this? Do you wind the string or shoe lace round and round till it covers the heel of the reed or just a couple of ties? Also, how tight does it need to be tied?
By the way. I am fairly new to playing the clarinet so this may explain my ignorance.
I would also like to say what an extremely good site this is. Everybody comes across very friendly and very helpful. Thank you in anticipation.
