Come on now, I'm sure we've all played or owned a Buffet clarinet of some kind or other at some point.
My first Buffet was a new Prestige low C bass back in 2000, then an old R13 Eb I bought off the famous aution site, then an old (and cracked) R13 full Boehm and finally a new RC Prestige basset horn - so I currently own a grand total of four Buffet clarinets.
And an RC bassoon.
I had a copper S3 Prestige alto but sold that on fairly quickly as it was far too 'polite' for what I wanted in an alto - the tuning was great and sounded good when I played it at home, but I realised very quickly it didn't have the power to play lead alto in a dance band with when I played it at a rehearsal one evening.

I play-tested one once (an RC Prestige). I was not impressed enough to buy one.

I've never played a Buffet clarinet. I have played a few different B&H's, Noblet, Leblanc, Selmer Bass, Malerne, Uebel Eb and some unidentified German clarinets - but never Buffet. Are they better than a Leblanc LL?

I'm another person who has never even tried a Buffet clarinet. I've never played a B&H 1010 either. Just Selmer and Leblanc.

I've tried some Leblancs and Selmers, and some Buffet E11s and an E13, but I've never owned one, wanted to own one, or tried a professional model. I play in B&H 926s.
But, I'm certainly not a professional. Quite far from it still.

I've only played a Buffet Prestige Bass clarinet professionally. Other than that it's been 1010s and Eaton Elites.

E11 was my first wooden clarinet. It was lovely (after the Regent II).
I tried an R13 and an RC to upgrade, but ended up with another manufacturer...

While I'm the ?proud? owner of a [for [student] sale] B12, finding it quite good, perhaps at the top of the Student models, my only sugnificart acquaintance with Buff's is re: the Evettes and E&S's, some V G !, and a couple of friend's R13's, 3 trial Vintages and an early Buff [1920s perhaps] . I recall finding some of their faults as the "Top of the Heap" horns in the latter. PM thots, Don

I owned a couple of Buffets; E11, E13, B13 and still have some to look at; B12, E11, RC, R13 .
I used to play guitar in a local band but quit in ’84. Since 2004 I’m a modest clarinet collector but don’t have the skills (yet) to play them as a pro.
Still I like it very much, especially on a german system clarinet (Uebel 632, 621 and 552), In some way I can’t, or won’t , switch to the Boehm system !

PeterPC, just a little off Topic. Your ISP says Tilburg, I was there quite recently playing in August. Was recorded for the Dutch Radio playing the 1st movt of the Brahms Eb Sonata on my Eaton Elites. I don't know if it was used as it was a shared concert with several others.

I tried an R13 at Pro Winds about eight years ago. I hated how stiff and resistant it was, but it was probably leaky. Otherwise, no, never.

I played an R13 for a short time and didnt like the tone it felt/sounded "stuffy" for me I found that I prefer the Selmer Soloist with a Vandoren B45 mouthpiece. But everyone has his or her favorite.
~~Been playing clarinet 17yrs and counting, now playing with the local community orchestra and now my son has taken on the tradition and I couldn't be more proud!~~

I have tried the E11, R13, Prestige and the Tosca, but didn't like it as much as my Cadenza. I have never owned a Buffet, even though most people sugeest that I do..

I have never played a Buffet younger than one from the 1890's which I played from about 1947 to about 1957. Since then I've played Selmers and LeBlancs. My current LL is a great instrument. Recent Buffets must be good, but I can't believe that their popularity can be attributed to clear superiority. I wonder how many of the Mafia have ever tried another brand.

Well, I do own one, R13, but seriously I am not sure if you could call it playing.
Enjoy

I think most serious, highly skilled amateurs and professional clarinetists in the USA have tried or owed a buffet clarinet at some point in the clarinet lives.

I tried an R13 in a store once and liked it, but that is the only time I've played a Buffet.
I do have a Buffet barrel that i always use on one of my Yamaha 250s. It helps the sound and pitch (being a shorter barrel).

Nope, not once, never have I played a Buffet...never heard anyone play one with a tone that I thought was worthy of trying one out myself. That is not to say that those who play Buffet's don't have wonderful tone, just not for me...they're a bit too shallow in my estimation...but then, who am I...right?

Why would you EVER want to drive a truck when you could drive a Cadillac?

Only one clarinet in my collection is a Buffet, an old 1976 R13 that goes down to low Eb. It has the most beautiful dark velvety tone, and I often play it in concerts if there are not too may fast pieces because unfortunately it is also the most uncomfortable clarinet to play. The RH pinkie keys are not easy to use and it's quite heavy.

I've never played a Buffet bass (I own a Noblet, and various borrowed ones were either Leblancs or Bundys) nor an alto (the one I used in college was a Selmer) nor a contra-alto (the school one was a Bundy).
I don't know what brand my C clarinet is. One tech thought it might be a Selmer.

Nope - never. Someone gave me an old one (seven rings..) but i never put it in playable condition. Have played several B&H, several Selmers, a Besson, a Pedler and Couesnon. Never thought Buffet would be better than the Couesnon or the old 926.
