So.. I have a good opportunity to obtain a Yam-650 at a great price, and I am giving it some serious consideration.
I'd like to know which of the mass-market mouthpieces (like Vandoren, etc.) you'd recommend for it. A custom mouthpiece really isn't an option and would be overkill for my skill level and for the groups I perform with.
Thanks in advance.

You know, the 4C mouthpieces that I believe come with it are actually quite consistent and not that bad, I've found.

There are lots of Vandorens that could be just fine, depending on your taste. M13 lyre, M15 and M30 are all very popular.
However, I would also consider some of the less expensive products that some of the custom makers are producing. The Clark Fobes Nova is a fine mouthpiece and in the same price range as a Vandoren. Clark's Debut is a great mouthpiece at a terrific price. Don't let the cost fool you. I have played many pro mouthpieces that don't play as well.

The are very nice and are a good bargain. MuncyWinds is one of the retailers that has them available.

There are plenty of other options from other makers, but I have had the opportunity to play these and have had students who use them with great success.

YOu also might check out Ben Redwine's offerings at http://www.redwinejazz.com. He offers some mid-line mouthpieces that are supposed to be pretty decent. I think Walter Grabner also has a mid-line mouthpiece nowadays http://www.clarinetxpress.com/intermezzo.html. Also,, Tom Ridenour makes some. There is a wonderful variety of semi-custom mouthpieces, all by excellent artisans. Mouthpiece selection is highly personal, and more dependent on the player than the instrument, if the bore is of normal dimensions.
