 Transparent clarinet

Does anyone recognise this clarinet in the Gigliotti Silk Swab's picture at 1stop? I can't seem to find it or a reference to it anywhere else on the internet...

"Buffet E-11 Acrylic.

For the last couple of years I've been seeing these go for about $800 - $1000.

Yup, guess you didn't get my joke.

There were however only about 1000 of these made so they really are a collectors item worth many times more than a plastic E-11 (which would only fetch $100 or so typically that age).

Were they marketed as the E11 in the US?

In the UK they were stamped B12 and sold for the same price as the standard model.

You are right - I wrote the model incorrectly - it was the B-12 not the E11.
I just fixed my posting.

You weren't wrong there at all as some of these clear perspex clarinets were indeed stamped as E11s - the one on Steve Sklar's site is stamped as an E11: http://www.clarinetperfection.com/galleryclar/Buffet/ClearE11/E11emblem.JPG

Interesting.

Does the clarinet fog up while it's being played?

The Mp + Barrel do immediately

... then the lower joint remains fogged up for the duration while the mouthpiece, barrel and upper part of the top joint go clear, and the areas where the fingers and RH thumb are in contact with the joint also go clear.

But to a greater or lesser degree depending on the temperature.

With crystal mouthpieces, they fog up when you begin playing when the mouthpiece is still cold, but soon clear as the mouthpiece warms up.

"fog up". Probably, just like your wood one does and like the acrylic Pyne mouthpieces do. Blummy: You'll just have to tongue your jokes more precisely in the future instead of keeping your tongue in your cheek.

So, is there such a thing as a transparent clarinetist?

It looks just like the one Paulo Moura plays. See photos at paulomoura.com.

There was a nice one on Ebay a few years ago and I was seriously thinking of getting it, just to have in my studio to show students.

I prepared to pay $800 and maybe go as high as $1000, which I thought was certainly fair, considering it's only a glorified B12.

The final selling price was double my final bid [whoa]

Yup - I got mine about 6 years ago. They do fetch a high price as a collectors item.

Vince Marinelli has one on display at his shop. (so there's 2 out of the thousand that were produced)

A fellow music teacher who I taught with in the same school had one. (so there's 3 accounted for)

Her father had owned a music store (and sold Buffet clarinets) and I suspect that these dealers had the inside track in acquiring these clarinets.

Actually it did play a bit better than today's Buffet B-12's.

Maybe it was because of the copper plated keys. [wink]

Yes, and he also explained the difference. With the transparent clarinet anyone can see if you play the wrong notes.....
